Woman jailed after giving birth during prison visit and suffocating baby girl by putting toilet paper in her mouth

A woman who stuffed toilet paper into the mouth of her newborn baby then left her to die in a prison toilet bin has pleaded guilty to first degree- manslaughter. Ashley Nicole Cox was visiting an inmate, believed to be her boyfriend, at a men's prison in Oldham County, Kentucky, when she gave birth to the girl in a toilet. Her claims she had suffered a miscarriage were rubbished by doctors who said the baby was 'alive and well when she was born'. According to staff at the Roederer Correctional Complex in La Grange, the 22 year old had been in the toilet ten minutes before they knocked on the door and found her bleeding, on March 7, 2010. She was taken to hospital after she failed to tell staff she had just given birth, the Courier Journal reports. After hospital tests revealed her deceit, a search was conducted at the prison and the body of the infant was found in a bin. Autopsy results showed that the baby girl was alive and healthy when she was born but could not determine a cause of death.
