The bomber, who was riding a motorcycle, detonated his explosives as a police patrol passed in the main northwestern city of Peshawar, said city police chief Liaqat Ali Khan. Three policemen were among over 30 people who were wounded by the blast, Khan said. Many of the dead and wounded were from a nearby passenger bus, which bore the brunt of the attack.

VANCOUVER -- Five people, including two children, were killed in a tragic car crash near the Canada-U.S. border in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey, B.C., late Sunday morning. Woman shoots husband dead as he tried to give her gun safety lesson as their two young children slept upstairs

A woman has been arrested after she shot and killed her husband as he gave her a gun safety lesson in their home outside Philadelphia. Michele Wanko, 42, told police that she and William Wanko, 42, had been 'casually drinking' vodka and lemonade for more than six hours when Mr Wanko took her into the basement to show her how to use his guns about 4am on Saturday. Their two young sons, age 2 and 5, were sleeping upstairs when Mrs Wanko racked the slide on a semi-automatic pistol and shot her husband in the chest, police say. 'I can't believe you shot me!' Crazed knifeman bursts into church and stabs choir members during closing hymns

At least four people have been hurt at a church in Albuquerque, New Mexico when a man went on a rampage towards the end of Sunday's service. Police say the 24-year-old man jumped out of the pews and stabbed several members of the Church's choir whilst they were singing. The four victims do not appear to have life-threatening injuries and are being treated at local hospitals.

Three dead after suspected gas explosion causes building to collapse in northern France

Three people are dead and at least 14 others have been injured after an explosion, believed to have been caused by a gas leak, caused a building to partly collapse in the French city of Reims. More than 100 rescue workers, firefighters and bomb and gas experts were deployed to the building in the subsidised housing complex that collapsed on Sunday morning in the city in the Champagne area east of Paris. Reims mayor Adeline Hazan told France's BFM television that 'a very powerful explosion' had taken place but the cause was unclear.

Stuntman dies during world record attempt as he tried to cross river on a zip-wire attached to his hair

A stuntman died yesterday during a world record attempt as he tried to cross a river on a zip-wire attached only to his hair. Sailendra Nath Roy, 50, was half way through the stunt when his ponytail became stuck in the wheeler of the rope and he was left hanging in mid-air for about 25 minutes. Despite desperate attempts to free himself, it is believed Mr Roy then suffered a major cardiac arrest and died.

A 12-year-old schoolgirl is believed to have hanged herself after being tormented by online cyber bullies about her hair and clothes. Katie Webb was found at her home in Evesham, Worcestershire, on Wednesday lunchtime and rushed to hospital by air ambulance. MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — Police say that 10 members of the musical group La Reyna de Monterrey have been killed and five injured in a road accident in northern Mexico. A police official says the driver of the vehicle that was carrying the band dozed off Saturday morning, causing the vehicle to strike the side of a truck then cross over into the other lane and crash head on with a tractor-trailer. Man dies after being trapped in commercial freezer

A Sydney man who was trapped inside a commercial freezer for half an hour with the temperature set at minus 19 degrees Celsius has died. The 23-year-old was operating a forklift alone on Saturday in Matraville in the city's east. The forklift is believed have tipped over, trapping the man against shelves inside the fridge. He was trapped for at least half an hour before being found by workers and taken to a nearby hospital in a critical condition. Police say he died today in hospital.

South Carolina mother charged in fire deaths of four children

CHARLESTON, S.C. — A South Carolina woman has been charged with four counts of homicide by child abuse in the deaths of her four young children who were home alone when they died in a mobile home fire, police said on Friday. Hope Kaneshia Hawkins, 21, was also charged with four counts of child neglect in the deaths of her two daughters and two sons. Fiery Afghan bus crash kills 45, Taliban blamed

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) — A bus collided on Friday with the wreckage of a truck that had been attacked by Taliban insurgents in southern Afghanistan, killing 45 people aboard the bus in a fiery crash, officials said. The battered oil tanker had been left in the middle of a narrow road near the border of Kandahar and Helmand provinces for several days after insurgents attacked it. Police considered the area too dangerous to enter, the officials said. Before sunrise Friday, the bus smashed into the truck and burst into flames, said Abdul Razaq, the provincial police chief of Kandahar.

The Brazilian was cleaning the loaded firearm, which he uses to go fishing, when he accidentally set it off and fired the spear into his left eye socket. Doctors were amazed when Mr Coutinho, who lives in Petropolis, 40 miles north of Rio de Janeiro arrived at Santa Teresa hospital 10 hours after the incident, still concious. Woman dies after heavy-set police officer sits on her

OSAKA — Police reported this week that in Sakai City, Osaka, last November a woman in her 40s died from a case of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a condition that occurs when oxygen is cut off from the brain. A possible cause of the HIE is suspected to have been the 100-kilogram police officer who had sat on the woman’s back like one would on a pony. According to police, at about 7 a.m. on Nov 9, Sakai Ward police received a 110 (Japan’s emergency number) call from a family complaining of a “disorderly woman.” The officer in question, who reportedly weighed 100 kgs with all of his equipment on, rushed to the scene with a group of fellow officers. Sure enough, they found an out of control woman screaming and throwing things in front of her home. The officers attempted to subdue the woman for 20 minutes when finally they got her one the ground face down and held her arms and legs. The large policeman assisted by sitting on the woman’s back. Soon after, she lost consciousness as a result of HIE. She was then taken to hospital where she died five days later.

Four young children, including twin girls, perished Wednesday afternoon when fire swept through a mobile home in the South Carolina city of Hartsville, authorities said. The 1-year-old twins and their brothers aged 3 and 4 were found dead in the home after firefighters put out the blaze, Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee said. Authorities said that the four children lived in the mobile home but have not been named. They added that the mother was standing in the front yard when emergency crews arrived.

Boy, 2, mauled to death by family's pit bull inside their home when his mother stepped into the restroom

Father-of-three 'killed his young children with a hunting knife after wife told him she was leaving for Open University lecturer'

A father killed his three children and then jumped from a 60ft disused quarry after his wife said she was leaving him for an Open University lecturer, an inquest has heard today. The bodies of Ceri Fuller, 35, his son Samuel, 12, and daughters Rebecca, eight, and Charlotte, seven, were discovered at Poles Coppice, Pontesbury Hill, Shropshire, on July 16 last year. All the children suffered stab wounds to their necks, believed to have been inflicted by a hunting knife found nearby. Fuller's fingerprint was found on the bloodstained Bowie-type knife that was recovered from the scene.

100 dolphins wash up on Italian coast after being hit by killer strain of measles

Scientists believe that more than 100 dolphins washed up dead along the Italian coast were struck down by a killer strain of measles. A total of 101 dolphin carcasses have been counted on the west coast of Italy since the beginning of the year. All are the same species - striped dolphins which have a distinctive blue and white pattern and grow to about eight feet long. They usually live for 50 or 60 years.

A teenager has died after her best friend became distracted while driving her and hit a barrier - impaling the girl on a metal guardrail. Alexia Douglas, 16, died on impact after Christina Shiver, who had only just passed her driving test, lost control of her SUV in St. Petersburg, Florida at 7pm on Friday and smacked into a barrier. The car jumped the curb onto the sidewalk. Authorities say metal guardrails pierced through the passenger's side windshield, killing Alexia immediately. Christina, also 16, was treated in hospital but only suffered minor injuries. MOSCOW (AP) — Authorities say a man opened fire in a southwestern town, killing at least six people before fleeing. Officials at the city hall in Belgorod said Monday that the man opened fire outside a department store, killing five people immediately, including a girl in her early teens. Another victim died in hospital. The RIA Novosti news agency cited local investigators as saying that the man opened fire while he tried to rob a gun store. Police locked down the entire neighborhood as they searched for the man, whom they believe to be a former convict. Police have not released the suspect's name. With gun control stricter than in many countries, such multiple killings are rare in Russia.

A young boy is dead along with four others after an SUV packed with 20 people flipped over in Arizona during a chase with Border Patrol agents. The agents were trying to stop the Chevy Tahoe as it traveled on Interstate 10 at around 11 p.m. Saturday, but the vehicle kept going and rolled over while trying to exit onto Highway 83 outside Tucson, the Arizona Daily Star reported. The dead included four men from Guatemala and a young boy, whose age wasn't released.

TOKYO — A woman in her 40s hanged herself in a supermarket toilet in Tokyo after she was caught shoplifting food, police said Monday. According to police, a supermarket employee in Kodaira saw the woman stealing groceries at around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Fuji TV reported that the woman was taken to an office and was being questioned when she requested to go to the toilet. She was escorted to a washroom where police say she proceeded to hang herself with her sweater. According to police, the woman was found and taken to a nearby hospital where she remained unconscious Monday. Doctors have described her condition as critical. Police said they have not yet been able to identify the woman.
