DETROIT - A metro Detroit man is behind bars after being accused by police of gouging an officer’s eye out.
Extra security was called in for the arraignment of 25-year-old Brownstown Township resident Matthew Cooper Wednesday.
He was charged with the assault of a police officer.
Wayne County Circuit Court Judge David Groner required Cooper to remain in handcuffs for the entirety of the hearing.
“I don’t care what he does, but he’s not taking those cuffs off,” Groner said.
Cooper was arrested in November at a Brownstown Township house on Glaser Street after allegedly getting into a fight with his girlfriend.
Police said while Cooper was being arrested he punched an officer, gouged his eye out and almost bit his finger off before running back into the house.
Police found Cooper inside the house and hit him with a Taser.
Although the prosecution agreed to let Cooper plead guilty to a lesser charge, Groner said he wouldn’t accept a deal from anyone who attacks a law enforcement officer.
“This is not a case where he should be given a break,” Groner said. “If he’s innocent, let him go to trial. If he’s guilty, he should plea guilty.”
With that, Groner ripped up the plea deal.
Cooper will remain in the Wayne County Jail until Jan. 5, the deadline for him to enter a plea.
