Guest rapes woman, stabs her and her mom

Police said a Royal Oak man invited to a Clawson woman’s home raped her during an assault in which he stabbed her repeatedly in the stomach and stabbed her mother in the chest.

Both victims were in critical condition in William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Clawson police said today.

Frank Smith, 52, was charged today with two counts of assault with intent to murder and one court of first-degree criminal-sexual conduct, each of which is punishable by up to life in prison, police said.

“The male was known to both parties through mutual friends and he had been invited to the house,” Lt. Scott Sarvello said today.

He gave this account of the incident: Police arrived at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday — at a three-bedroom house in the 600 block of Goodale, just west of Rochester Road and one-half mile north of 14 Mile — to find the door opened by a woman, 46, naked from the waist down, covered with blood and suffering multiple stab wounds to her stomach area. Standing just behind her was a man, also covered in blood, with his pants undone.

The woman’s mother, 75, was found in a back bedroom with four stab wounds to her chest, near her heart.

“The motive for the stabbing we believe is that he asked her for a sexual favor and she refused,” Sarvello said.

When the daughter refused, Smith began stabbing her and she ran to the bedroom of her mother, who was lying in bed, chased by her knife-wielding assailant, Sarvello said.

Smith stabbed the woman’s mother while continuing to attack her daughter, who ran to the front of the house to call 911, he said.

“At some point during the attack, the suspect committed a criminal sexual assault on the 46-year-old,” he said.

Police recovered the knife that they said Smith routinely carries on his belt. He had been drinking and has a long criminal history, including domestic violence, concealed-weapons violations and an escape from prison, he said.

Smith was given a $1-million bond by Magistrate Clement Waldmann in 52-4 District Court in Troy and in Oakland County Jail awaiting a preliminary exam Wednesday.
