A Beaumont man faces a charge of driving while intoxicated with a child after allegedly losing control of his pickup and leaving his 2-year-old child behind on Friday.
Jeffrey Jenkins, 36, was in the Jefferson County Correctional Facility on a $10,000 bond, according to Officer Randy Stevens, a Beaumont Police Department spokesman.
Stevens said witnesses reported seeing Jenkins speeding and driving recklessly near the intersection of Detroit and Buchanan streets when his pickup swerved and flipped over onto its side.
The witnesses said Jenkins got out of the truck and ran, leaving his 2-year-old child hanging out of one of the vehicle's windows.
Passers-by cared for the child until police arrived. The child was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and returned to the care of the mother.
Police were later able to track down Jenkins and arrest him, Stevens said. He also had an outstanding warrant for possession of a controlled substance.
If convicted of the driving while intoxicated with a child charge, Jenkins faces up to two years in state jail.
