Yvonne Heaney, aged 48, was arrested on Sunday after her son Glen's body was found at the Sky Plaza Hotel in Rhoose, Vale of Glamorgan.
The Welsh Ambulance Service said it received a call from the hotel at 5pm on Saturday.
The hotel, which is popular among air passengers for its proximity to Cardiff Airport, advertises rooms from £38 a night.
Shocked local residents said they could not believe it was at the centre of a murder investigation.
"It's very tragic," said Michael Andreou, 69, who owns land next to the hotel.
"I never thought this would happen next door in the 21 years I have been here. Nothing happens around here."
Another neighbour from a nearby farm said: "It's just people using hotels for the airport. There is never any trouble around here."
A third local resident, who did not want to be named, said she saw police cars at the hotel from 5pm on Saturday.
"I heard police cars going past, but I thought it was for the airport," she said.
"But then I saw them in the car park of the Sky Plaza. There was a tremendous amount of activity."
Yvonne Heaney, of Penarth, was remanded into the custody of a South Wales clinic when she appeared at Cardiff Crown Court charged.
Her case was next listed for June 14 at the same court.
