The group of 100 riders, most of them aged eight to 17, headed out late on Thursday for the ride when several of the animals panicked, throwing off their riders and trampling them, police in the German town of Lethen said.
Forty-four people were injured in the crush, several of them seriously.
One 14-year-old girl remained in critical condition in hospital on Friday.
Several adults were accompanying the group, which had set out from the holiday stable, where they had been staying, police said.
It was not immediately clear what caused the horses to panic.
