Horror as pilot killed in crash after single-engine plane slams into palm tree in middle of LA street

A small plane crash-landed in residential West Los Angeles neighborhood three miles northeast of the Santa Monica Airport Friday evening, killing the pilot and leaving a blackened wreckage on a street corner. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the pilot of the single-engine Cessna 210 declared an emergency before the plane went down, but it has yet to be determined why he did it. He said the pilot was approaching the airport for a landing when the crash occurred. No one else was hurt in the incident.
