Man shoots dead door-to-door lobster salesman 'execution-style' seven years after pulling gun on female meter reader

A Florida man was arrested and charged with murder for allegedly shooting to death a door-to-door salesman seven years after prosecutors say he pulled a gun on a woman who came by to read his electric meter. According to an arrest report, Kenneth Roop, 52, of Cape Coral, shot and killed 30-year-old Nick Rainey, who stopped by his house last Wednesday to offer him frozen steaks and lobster. Rainey, an employee of Blue Ribbon Steak and Seafood, had just knocked on Roop’s door at 1815 SW 30th Terrace when the 52-year-old homeowner pulled into the driveway in his pickup truck, the arrest report cited by Fort Myers News-Press said. As the salesman started walking toward Roop’s truck, the suspect told police he became ‘more than a little nervous’ because he spotted something in the stranger’s hand.

With Rainey drawing closer, Roop pulled out his 9mm Glock from his pocket and fired one shot, hitting the 30-year-old in the shoulder, the alleged gunman told police. Rainey tumbled to the ground and yelled at Roop, ‘You shot me’ in what the 52-year-old described to investigators as an ‘antagonistic’ manner. Although Rainey was lying on the ground wounded, Roop said he was still in fear and thought that the victim was trying to reach for something, so he shot the young man in the back of the head, ‘for effect,’ the arrest report stated. Roop told detectives Rainey should have respected his three ‘No Trespassing’ signs and explained he didn’t warn Rainey before opening fire, telling police, ‘I’m not going to give him the chance to do something to me; I was in fear.’

John Godfrey, who was selling meat with Rainey that day, said his colleague had no idea what was coming. While the 30-year-old man lay face down bleeding from his shoulder wound, Godfrey said his assailant sat in his truck for a few seconds before firing a second shot at his head, ‘execution style.’ He described the 52-year-old suspect as showing ‘no emotion whatsoever’ in that moment.
