$1 million bond set for Bartlesville suspect in grandmother's fatal beating

BARTLESVILLE – A Washington County judge set a $1 million bond Thursday for a 20-year-old Bartlesville man who is being held in the Halloween beating death of his grandmother. Special Judge John Gerkin followed the request of Washington County District Attorney’s Office in setting the bail for Brandon William Capps who was arrested Wednesday night on a complaint of killing Clara Jean Hammer, 81, with a baseball bat. Formal charges are expected to be filed Friday. Bartlesville police were called to Hammer’s home in the 4700 Block of Dartmouth Drive around 2 p.m. Wednesday after a neighbor found her body inside the residence. When police arrived, they found a baseball bat lying next to her body. “She appeared to have been beaten to death and exhibited injuries to her head,” according to court records. “The home was ransacked and furniture destroyed.”
