Four dead after plane, glider collide in B.C.

Four people are dead after a plane and a powered glider collided mid-air over a campground near Pemberton, B.C., on Saturday afternoon. RCMP received multiple calls at about 12:20 p.m. about the crash between the Cessna 150 and the powered glider. Officers responding to the crash found four victims, two from each aircraft, and a dog, Sgt. Rob Knapton said. The Cessna was from 100 Mile House, and had a man, a woman and a dog on board. At least 27 people have been killed after gangs armed with knives attacked a police station and a local government building in a remote region of western China today, according to state media. The Xinhua agency said mobs in the Xinjiang region - home to a large Muslim Uighur minority - set upon buildings in the township of Lukqun at around 6am local time, stabbing people and setting fire to police cars. Nine police officers and security guards and eight civilians were killed before police opened fire on the attackers, leaving 10 dead, regional Communist Party officials told the agency.

Jamie Boult, 25, entered the ground floor waterside flat of Delia Hughes in Southampton, Hampshire, and planned to 'kill whoever was in there', it is alleged. He rained down eight blows on the pensioner’s head from behind, knocking her to the ground with the heavy and bloodied weapon. She was left with a broken skull and severely damaged brain. Boult had hidden behind her bedroom door after tripping on the patio blinds, and pounced when the frail widow went to investigate the noise. Prosecutor William Mousley QC told Winchester Crown Court that Boult 'brought the hammer down hard from above his head, saying nothing'.

He added: 'After he had hit her once and she had fallen, he hit her again on the top/front of her head. She did not try to defend herself. 'He was trying to kill her.' Boult waited a few seconds to see if anybody else arrived, before ransacking the bedroom, it is claimed. He went through Mrs Hughes jewellery box, which was left upturned on her bed, and took bracelets and necklaces. They were later recovered from the home he shared with his mother. Boult even went into the kitchen of Mrs Hughes’ home during the attack, where he took a carton of orange juice to drink.

Authorities have charged a central Missouri man with first-degree murder after a 13-year-old girl who had been reported missing was found dead on an unoccupied farm. A man was (today) sentenced to five life sentences after he admitted killing his wife and four stepchildren. A judge heard that former roofer and removal man Lee Ford garrotted Lesley Ford, 36, and her children Sarah Tranter, 17, Anne-Marie Tranter, 16, Steven Tranter, 14, and Craig Tranter, 13, at their isolated home at Carnkie, near Helston, Cornwall last August. The court heard he killed them separately with a 2ft long rope before hiding their bodies in a wood shed by the bungalow. He later moved the two girls' bodies and buried them in a field four miles away. Police were alerted only after the family had been missing for more than a month. Nigel Pascoe QC, prosecuting, said the attack was calculated and without motive. He said: "This was not a crime of passion but of savagery." Mr Pascoe said the crime was "by any standards an enormous, pitiful tragedy and a tale of true horror".

A 19-year-old girl has been burnt to death and her mother beaten after pleading with village elders to be allowed to marry a boy from the same village and same caste, Indian police have confirmed. Anju Yadav, 19, from Karahkol village, in Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh, was set on fire at her home while her mother, Gyanwati Devi, 48, was on the other side of the village pleading with the village council to allow Anju to marry her boyfriend of two-years, Ranjit Yadav, 21. But the village council, along with the boy's father, Jai Hind Yadav, 52, rejected their pleas insisting it was against tradition.

Army ranger killed by freak parachute accident after cords wrapped round his neck when routine jump went wrong

An army ranger was killed in a freak parachute accident after the cords became wrapped around his neck during a routing training jump in Georgia. The soldier, who has not yet been named, was dragged 350ft by his parachute after the wind caught it as he prepared to land at Fort Stewart in Savannah. Members of his regiment rushed to the ranger's aid, cutting away the cords and harness that had wrapped round his neck, but they were unable to revive him after the accident on Thursday afternoon.

Stalker gets death sentence for murdering 2 relatives of his victim

NAGASAKI — The Nagasaki District Court on Friday sentenced a man to death for murdering the mother and grandmother of a woman he had been stalking. Gota Tsutsui, 28, from Kuwana in Mie Prefecture, was convicted of stabbing to death Mitsuko Yamashita, 56, and her mother, Hisae Yamashita, 77, in the rear compartment of their minivan outside their home in Saikai, Nagasaki Prefecture, on Dec 16, 2011. The victims were the mother and grandmother of Tsutsui’s former girlfriend. Tsutsui’s lawyer had entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, Fuji TV reported. The court heard that prior to the murders, Tsutsui sent 17 emails to the woman’s relatives threatening to kill them if they interfered with his efforts to get back together with his ex-girlfriend. The case gained notoriety when it was revealed that Chiba prefectural police failed to act on a complaint against the stalker and went off on a holiday. After the murders, the National Public Safety Commission reprimanded 20 police officers at Chiba police headquarters, and at Narashino police station, where the complaint was filed.
