TORONTO - A Brampton teen has died after a car-surfing stunt went wrong, Peel police say.
The 19-year-old was riding on the trunk of a car Tuesday afternoon in the Father Tobin-Bramalea Rds. area in Brampton when he fell.
The victim was taken to a Brampton hospital before being transferred to a trauma unit in Toronto. He died just before 11 p.m. Wednesday, Peel Regional Police Sgt. Matt Small said.
The illegal stunt is commonly performed in the United States, but less so in Canada, Const. George Tudos said.
The 16-year-old driver of the 1998 Honda Civic has been charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm and dangerous driving causing bodily harm, but police will be in touch with the Crown today to upgrade the charges, Small said.
•In April 2012, a teen riding on the top of a van in Mississauga’s Square One parking lot was thrown off during a sharp turn and suffered brain damage.
•In May 2010, a 19-year-old Ajax man suffered serious head injuries when he fell off a moving vehicle. The driver put on the brakes causing the victim to fall forward.
