Ryan Kovacs loved ex-girlfriend Dawn Bailey with all his heart.
But he couldn’t have her.
So he killed her.
Kovacs, 29, who pleaded guilty in August to second-degree murder, wept in a court last week as he apologized for killing Bailey and setting her body on fire.
“Mere words can not convey how sorry I am,” Kovacs told his sentencing hearing while addressing the victim’s family and friends. “There is nothing I can say to lessen your pain ... when you pray for her soul, pray for mine, too, for I am truly sorry.”
As Kovacs’ mother wept in court, Bailey’s mother collapsed against her husband sobbing, then fled the court in tears.
“He isn’t sorry,” insisted Peter Valente, of Barrie, a man who was dating
Bailey and had planned to propose to her. “He’s just sorry he got caught.”
