A five-month-old baby died from rickets because his devoutly religious parents had put him on a strict diet as part of their faith, a court heard yesterday. Nkosiyapha Kunene, 46, and his wife Virginia, 32, were told they could face jail after they admitted to the manslaughter of their son, Ndingeko, who died in June 2012. The case has raised concerns that rickets - a Victorian-era disease - is taking hold amongst a generation of children who have poor diets and don’t get enough sunlight.
