Women are being failed by NHS maternity services with more than 14 babies a day in England either stillborn or dying within seven days of their birth, according to a scathing report by MPs. A pensioner has died after deliberately setting himself on fire inside a dental surgery. The 66-year-old doused himself in lighter fuel and set himself ablaze in the reception area of the Little London Dental Care surgery in Chichester, West Sussex. HIROSHIMA — A 30-year-old unemployed woman was sentenced to eight years in prison by the Hiroshima District Court Tuesday for fatally beating her 11-year-old daughter with a golf club at their home in Fuchu, Hiroshima Prefecture, in October 2012. The court heard that the defendant, Asato Horiuchi, beat her daughter Yuma with a golf club in the morning, Fuji TV reported. While she was driving her daughter over to her parents’ house in the afternoon, Yuma lost consciousness and Horiuchi stopped at a police koban for help.

The girl was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later. According to the Hiroshima prefectural government’s child welfare division, Horiuchi and her mother abused Yuma in February 2009. At that time, officials placed Yuma in a children’s institution where she remained for two years until her mother took custody of her again last year. Horiuchi told police she got angry because her daughter lied to her. Pictures of the smiling young girl circulated in the media following the incident leading commentators to ask what she could have possibly done to drive her mother to beat her.

Man, 66, found guilty of strangling his 30-year-old girlfriend to death and living with her body for more than two weeks

A California man has been found guilty of murdering his 30-year-old girlfriend and living with her body in his apartment for two weeks. A jury convicted Santa Cruz resident John Bruce Clauer, 66, following a three-week trial after only four hours of deliberation. Clauer now faces up to 25 years in prison for the murder of Heather Stearns, 30. 'We were extremely pleased that they (the jury) were not out very long, and we were extremely pleased with the verdict,' prosecutor Jeff Rosell told the Santa Cruz Sentinel outside court. Clauer reportedly sighed and was reprimanded for outbursts during the trial, but faced the verdict stoically. Jury foreman Conrado Montes, 71, told the Sentinal that testimony from Clauer's neighbors and ex-girlfriends during the trial 'was like seeing one of those really bad horror movies.'

Clauer's neighbors and ex-girlfriends testified during the trial, as well as police, the Santa Cruz County coroner and others. 'He [Clauer] was slowly building up this hatred [for Stearns]. He was like a time bomb. It all came to a halt one night.' The jury heard how Stearns was strangled and stomped to death in Clauer's apartment near the San Lorenzo Rivermouth in April 2011. The Sentinal reports that Stearns was an alcoholic whose dependency had taken over her life. She lived with Clauer because he provided her with a place to stay and booze. According to neighbors, the couple argued regularly and the sounds of Clauer's vicious beating of Stearns was nothing unusual, so they turned up the television and did not notify police. It wasn't until a strong odor emanating from Clauer's apartment two weeks later led the neighbors to investigate. The obtained keys from the building manager and entered the apartment. They discovered Stearns' corpse, wrapped in blankets on a bed.

Oita woman arrested over death of 7-year-old son

OITA — Police in Oita have arrested a 40-year-old woman over the death of her 7-year-old son. According to police, the woman, identified as Noriko Okada, killed her son Koki sometime between midnight and 2 a.m. on Friday. NTV reported that Okada’s husband called 119, saying that Koki was unconscious and bleeding from the mouth. When an ambulance arrived, Koki was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest. He was confirmed dead shortly after at a hospital. Police said there were strangulation marks on the boy’s neck and that Okada had admitted to killing her son, but has so far given no motive. Okada and her husband have two other children—a daughter, 17, and a son, 6. Police said Okada had been institutionalized several years ago and that her family reported that her behavior had started becoming erratic about two months ago, according to NTV.

Woman charged with strangling her 8-year-old daughter

OKAYAMA — Police said Friday they have charged a 51-year-old woman with murder after she allegedly strangled to death her 8-year-old daughter at their home in Kibichuo, Okayama Prefecture, on Jan 14. According to police, the woman, identified as Chizuru Kojima, used a towel to strangle her daughter Miori after she had returned home from her special needs school that day, Fuji TV reported. Police said that after killing her daughter, Kojima then went into the kitchen and inflicted several life-threatening wounds on herself with a sharp knife. The girl and her mother were found in their apartment at around 5:40 p.m. They were rushed to the hospital immediately, but the girl was pronounced dead upon arrival. Following her recovery on Thursday, Kojima was quoted as telling police, “After killing my child, I could only think that I too had to die.”

L'ILE-VERTE, Que. — Three people are dead and 30 are missing after fire tore through a seniors' home in eastern Quebec on Thursday. The blaze broke out around 12:30 a.m. at the Residence du Havre, home to about 60 people. Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the small town about 230 km northeast of Quebec City. TORONTO - Jurors looked at police photographs and watched video of bloody handprints of a university criminology student whose throat was slit before a killer set her ablaze. Carina Petrache, 23, left a trail of blood as she raced from the basement of her Huron St. home and into the kitchen where she collapsed. In her opening to the jury Monday, Crown attorney Jennifer Stanton said accused murderer Farshad “Shawn” Badakhshan, who was dating Petrache, trapped her in his basement bedroom by lighting a fire on July 2, 2010.

Badakhshan, 31, who has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, contends he’s not criminally responsible because he was suffering from a mental disorder at the time. The Crown showed police video and photographs of the charred basement — where much of the blood had been washed away by firefighters. They extinguished four fires set by the accused and diluted the bloody stains on the bedding. The accused man was also caught in the fire and lost a leg, most of his ears and has a disfigured face, court heard. But the victim’s bloody handprints on the door, the bannister and walls remained intact since the fire hoses never sprayed those areas.

Four killed as explosions rip through plants in two U.S. states

OMAHA, Neb. - Explosions in two U.S. states, one at an animal feed plant in Nebraska and another at a steel plant in Oklahoma, killed at least four people and injured almost a dozen on Monday, authorities said.

An explosion and fire flattened part of an animal feed plant in Omaha, Nebraska, killing two people and injuring at least 10 others, authorities said. In the Omaha incident, about 38 employees were working at the International Nutrition plant at midmorning when there was an explosion and part of the building collapsed, interim Fire Chief Bernard Kanger told a news conference. One body has been recovered and the other is expected to be recovered on Tuesday from the industrial accident, Kanger said. Of the 10 injured, four were in critical condition, he said. All employees have been accounted for, but authorities are not sure if there were any visitors in the plant, he said.

In a separate incident, two workers likely "burned to death" when a furnace exploded at about 4 p.m. local time (2200 GMT) at an Oklahoma steel plant, a Marshall County Sheriff's Office dispatcher said. A third person was injured at Mid American Steel and Wire in Madill, Oklahoma, but treated for burns and released from a local hospital, said Madill Fire Department Fire Chief Keith Pruitt.

According to police, they received a call at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night from Ikuo Naito saying that he had killed his mother. At one point McCluney had sex with another of her lovers, Andrew Doyle, as the humiliated man lay covered in blood on the floor – with Doyle kicking him throughout.

When detectives asked McCluney why she had sex while the helpless victim was still in the room, she said: 'I’ll admit it – I felt horny.' Despite subjecting the man to 'inhuman' torture, she was spared jail after admitting false imprisonment at Manchester Crown Court. Judge Richard Mansell QC, gave her an 18-month, suspended for two years. He concluded she had been under the influence of Hogan, after an ‘abusive’ relationship during her teens, and was in fear of Doyle. The court heard that the victim, now 42, was so traumatised he did not speak about the ordeal for four years. It was only when he went to counselling after a suicide attempt that he revealed the details of his horrifying experience and the group was arrested. On the night of the attack, the victim, who says he has by flashbacks and ‘can still taste bleach’, was found wandering in the city centre in a ‘stupor’ with severe facial injuries.

A mother was killed in front of her family when she was struck by lightning on a Brazilian beach. Rosangela Biavati a 36-year-old married mother of one, died instantly when she was hit by the bolt of electricity during a trip to Guaruja, a popular seaside resort on the coast of Sao Paulo. The first photograph shows the victim heading towards the water with outstretched arms as she warns her 11-year-old son to get out of the sea because of the gathering storm overhead. The next image captures the electrical discharge streaking down.

Child sex gang found guilty of series of rapes against five vulnerable girls including one aged just TWELVE

A gang of Eastern Europeans were yesterday found guilty of subjecting girls as young as 12 to horrific sexual abuse. Two adults and three boys were convicted of rape and sexual assault in what prosecutors described as one of the worst cases they had ever seen. A court heard how the group, of Czech, Slovak and Kurdish origin, groomed five vulnerable girls between 12 and 14 and then abused them in a range of locations, including near a playground, in 2012.

Indiana supermarket shooting leaves three dead

A gunman opened fire inside an Indiana supermarket on Wednesday evening, killing two women - a shopper and an employee - before being shot dead in a shootout with police, authorities said. Indiana State Police said the shooting happened at around 10 p.m. local time at an open but sparsely populated Martin's Super Market in Elkhart, a city of some 50,000 residents about 140 miles north of Indianapolis in the U.S. state. "We believe it was a single shooter and he is dead," Indiana State Police spokesman Trent Smith told a news conference. He referenced recent shootings in public places that have ignited a fierce national debate on gun control. On Tuesday, a 12-year-old boy wounded two students when he opened fire with a shotgun at a New Mexico middle school. It was the second attack at a U.S. middle school in the past three months.

Falling steel acrobatics ring falls, kills Chicago dancer during rehearsal break

A Chicago dancer was killed Monday in a freak accident when a steel aerial acrobatics ring fell and hit him in the back of the head. Marco Antonio Huicochea Gonzalez, 22, died as he and his fellow performers at DanceWorks Chicago took a rehearsal break, the Chicago Tribune reported. Such a ring is a commonly used dancing prop. It’s unclear how much the ring weighed.

94-year-old woman strangled to death; grandson commits suicide

OSAKA — Police in Osaka, investigating the Jan 7 murder of a 94-year-old woman, said Tuesday that the victim’s 37-year-old grandson apparently committed suicide on Sunday. According to police, Tsuyako Nigorisawa was found strangled in her apartment in Toyonaka Ward on Jan 7. Her grandson, Hiroshi Tsutsusaki, who lived with her, went missing. TV Asahi reported that on Sunday, Tsutsusaki committed suicide by jumping off a platform in front of a train at JR Kakogawa station. Police said they had retrieved Tsutsusaki’s smartphone which he had left in the apartment. On it, they found various messages to his grandmother including, “I’m so sorry.”

Police in India are hunting a man-eating tiger that is believed to have killed seven villagers in two weeks after escaping from an animal reserve. The tiger's latest victim was an unidentified woman who was found in a forest Tuesday in Uttar Pradesh, India yesterday. The female tiger is believed to be prowling over an area covering around 80 miles and is considered to be far more dangerous than others in the area due to a lack of hunting experience that forces the desperate cat to move closer to human occupation.

'Reclusive' care home worker obsessed with TV killer Dexter stabbed his mother 53 times and left her to bleed to death after they rowed about his cannabis smoking

A care home worker obsessed with TV serial killer Dexter has been jailed after he admitted murdering his mother after the pair had rowed about his cannabis smoking. Mark Howe repeatedly stabbed and slashed Katrina Wardle in the face, mouth, neck, chest and arms before leaving her to bleed to death on her bedroom floor in an 'appallingly savage' attack. A judge said the brutal assault was 'akin to torture'. The 21-year-old, who a court heard 'lived in a fantasy world', attacked Mrs Wardle, 48, at the family home in St Matthew’s, Leicester, in the early hours of July 16 last year.

Leicester Crown Court was told Howe was 'a recluse' obsessed with US TV series Dexter, which features a fictional police worker, Dexter Morgan, leading a double life as a serial knife-wielding killer. He used a photograph of Dexter Morgan with a blood-splattered face as his own Facebook profile picture - and had searched ‘Dexter’s kill knife’ on the internet in the run-up to the killing. Judge Mr Justice Haddon-Cave sentenced Howe to life in prison, and told him he would have to serve at least 21 years and six months before he could be considered for release. He added: 'You attacked your mother with appalling savagery, causing more than 53 separate wounds. One can only imagine the horror of her realisation at what was being done to her by her own son. 'The sheer brutality and ferocity of the attack, which must have lasted some minutes, was akin to torturing her. 'She curled up in a foetal position, trying to protect herself.' The court heard Howe carried out the 'horrifying act' with a 12-inch knife, the tip of which was bent by the force used.
