Earthquake near Iran nuclear plant kills 7, injures 45

TEHRAN, Iran — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 struck a town Thursday in southern Iran, killing seven people while causing no damage at the country’s only nuclear power plant, state television reported. Four people killed by vehicles in New York ahead of Thanksgiving Day

Four people died in three accidents during a half-hour span Wednesday evening, cops said. A 54-year-old cyclist on his way home from work was killed in Queens when a truck hit him just before 5 p.m., cops said. The driver fled and is being sought by authorities.

The couple, together since their teens, had checked into the world-famous Hotel Lutetia on Thursday night, and taken medication designed to induce a painless death, according to Le Parisien. They were found dead, hand-in-hand, in their bed on Friday morning by a member of staff, with two letters left by their bedside. On Monday it was revealed that one of them contained a scathing attack on France’s prohibition of euthanasia, which has provoked renewed debate on the issue.

“By what right can a person be forced into a cruel [situation], when they wish to end their life peacefully?” asked the letter, excerpted in Le Parisien on Monday. “Isn’t my freedom only limited by the freedom of others? By what right can they prevent a person [from ending their life peacefully], when they’ve paid their taxes, have no debts to the state, have worked all their lives, and then done voluntary service?”

Georgette, in particular, expressed her anger at being denied the “gentle death” they sought, by France’s long-standing ban on euthanasia. Underlining the couple’s determination, their eldest son told Le Parisien on Monday that they had made their decision to die together “several decades ago.” “They feared being separated or dependent, more than they feared death,” he added. The episode has reignited a debate in France about the legal status of assisted suicide and euthanasia.

College student, 21, 'found strangled to death by boyfriend she had broken up with'

A 21-year-old college student was found dead in her apartment Monday and police believe her boyfriend strangled her to death. Brooke Locke was a third-year occupational therapy student at Husson University in Bangor, Maine and shared the apartment on Essex street with her boyfriend and fellow Husson student Zachary Mailloux, 21. Franklin Davis admitted in court to killing 16-year-old Shania Gray, describing how he lured her into his car outside her school, shot her and dumped her body in a river. But he said he killed her out of revenge and hatred, not to obstruct the sexual assault case that was nearing trial. A Dallas jury convicted Davis of capital murder Tuesday before sentencing him to death. Gray was remembered as a vivacious, friendly girl who often played basketball in the family driveway. Most people did not know that she was at the center of the sexual assault case against Davis. Her mother told police in the Dallas suburb of Mesquite that Davis sexually assaulted Gray while she was baby-sitting his children. Davis, known by the nickname “Wish,” exposed himself and had sex with the girl four separate times in 2011, according to a police affidavit.

Nine people armed with axes and knives were shot dead when they attacked the police station of Selibuya township in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region's Kashgar prefecture, killing two assistant officers, on Saturday. Two other officers were injured, according to a statement by the Xinjiang government's information office released Saturday night. The statement said order was restored following the incident, which began around 5:30 pm. One of the attackers has been identified as Abula Ahat. No civilians were injured in the attack. It was the second attack this year on Selibuya's police station in Bachu county. In April, a terror attack by a 25-member gang in the town left 21 dead, including six attackers and six police officers. The clash was described by the region's information office as a "severe, violent terror incident".

Her jaw and skull were broken in the vicious attack and she died in hospital the following day, when life support equipment was turned off.

'Die, my daughter, die!' An old-world 'honor killing' in modern St. Louis

Like many teenagers, Tina Isa didn’t listen to her parents. They lived in different worlds, in effect. Her father, Zein Isa, was a Palestinian Muslim with Old World ideas about how his child should and should not behave. His wife, Maria, a Brazilian Catholic, was more a martinet than a mother. But Tina was a headstrong modern girl growing up in big-city St. Louis, not some medieval village. At age 16, she was a bright senior honors student at rugged Roosevelt High School. She dreamed of studying aeronautics in college. She wanted to learn to fly. She liked hip hop music and giggled with girlfriends about cute boys.

“She was so American,” a schoolmate said. Zein and Maria Isa tried to keep their daughter — the youngest of four — on a short leash. They discouraged her from playing sports and forbid her from going on school trips. Her father decreed that she was destined for an arranged marriage with a good Muslim from his West Bank hometown. She was not allowed to date or take a job. When she managed to steal away to the junior prom, they tracked her down and hauled her home. Six weeks into Tina’s senior year, her parents began the process of withdrawing her from school for disobeying “family rules.” During a conference with the girl’s guidance counselor, Maria Isa described her daughter as a “tramp” and a “whore.”

On Nov. 6, 1989, Tina was late coming home. Her parents were waiting, glaring through the windows, as a classmate — a boy she had secretly begun dating — walked her to the door. When she stepped inside, her mother fumed, “Where were you, bitch?” Tina explained that she had taken a part-time job at a Wendy’s restaurant a mile from home and had just finished her first shift. “We do not accept that — to work!” shouted her father. He raged about fornication with the boy and called his daughter a “she-devil.” For several minutes, they argued in a mix of English and Arabic about whether Tina would be allowed to continue living with her parents. “Come on, throw me out!” Tina said. “OK, here is my key.”

During the argument, Maria Isa searched Tina’s school bag, interrogating her about shoes, books and a newspaper she found inside. The father suddenly cut off the conversation. “Listen, my dear daughter, do you know that this is the last day?” Zein Isa said. “Huh?” Tina replied. “Do you know that you are going to die tonight?” When he returned from the kitchen with a 7-inch boning knife, Tina grasped that he was serious. She cried out, “Mother, please help me!” “What help?” the mother replied. “Are you going to listen? Are you going to listen?” “Yes! Yes! Yes, I am!”

But it was too late. As her mother pinned the screaming girl to the living room floor, her father raised the knife and buried it in her left breast six times. “No! Please!” she shouted. “Shut up!” her mother replied. “Die! Die quickly!” said the father. After one final death groan, he added, “Quiet, little one! Die, my daughter, die!” The parents then called 911 to announce that Tina had attacked them. Zein Isa told police he had killed her in self-defense. St. Louis detectives were trying to make sense of the case the next day when they were contacted by the FBI.
