Syrian forces pound Homs, '27 civilians killed'

DAMASCUS: Syrian forces killed at least 27 civilians on Tuesday, including 16 in the shelling of neighbourhoods in Homs, monitors said, as regime forces massed around the flashpoint city raising fears of an imminent ground attack.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said three children and a woman were among 16 people who died in "intensive shelling" that targeted the Homs neighbourhood of Baba Amr.

Berkeley man, 67, slain outside his house in hills

Residents of the tranquil Berkeley hills were in shock Sunday after police described a horrific slaying, with a homeowner beaten after confronting a young man - an apparent stranger - who had trespassed onto his property.

Authorities did not identify the victim, but neighbors and public records indicated that the owner of the home where the Saturday night killing occurred was Peter Cukor, 67, who owned a logistics consulting firm. His family declined to talk.

3 killed, 4 injured in car accident involving 83-yr-old driver

According to police, the accident took place at around 6 p.m. at an intersection on Route 40 when the 83-year-old driver of a car containing six passengers attempted to turn right and was hit by an oncoming truck, TV Asahi reported.

Police said three passengers were killed at the time of the collision, two women in their 70s and one 82-year-old man. Four others are reported to have sustained injuries, some of them serious.

Man charged with stabbing 70-year-old woman to death in Dorchester home while young child in house

Police said they were called to 45 Codman Hill Ave. to investigate a break-in around 1:43 a.m. today. Arriving officers found the body of the woman, who had been stabbed multiple times.

Dismembered dogs found in Coatesville home

Officials say the scene inside was dark and disturbing with elements of witchcraft and the occult on vivid display.

In the living room, investigators say they found two dog skulls and a dog skeleton that had been gold-leafed.

They then walked into the kitchen and found two dog skeletons on the counter and a dog's head in the freezer.

Authorities say the scene was even more sickening when they walked into the home's backyard.

They found dog fragments charred in a fire pit and chicken parts hanging from a tree. Two live chickens and another dog head were also found in the back.

Officials say they found books on witchcraft and the occult, as well as marijuana, a gun, and various knives and machetes.

Rather than alerting authorities when Nancy Johnston died, Derek Tanke, 47, allegedly stole her debit card to buy vodka and pay for two more days in the Joliet, Illinois motel.

MEXICO CITY - At least 44 people died in a fight between rival gangs at an overcrowded prison in northern Mexico in a violent outbreak that authorities said could have been a distraction that allowed some inmates to escape.

The victim and her 22-year-old friend were preparing for a youth service evening at the church in Samson Street on Friday night when the attack occurred.

An orthodox Jew has been found not guilty of failing to produce an ID card because it was against his religious principles to carry any object on Saturday – the Jewish sabbat - the Telegraaf reports.

From the day her son was born, Neha Patel said, she hated him.

On Thursday, that hatred reached a fatal level, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Investigators said Patel slapped Ishan, her 1-year-old son, then purposefully left him alone to drown in a bathtub half full of water at their Lakeland home.

When she returned 10 minutes later and found him unconscious, she refused to perform CPR, even though she knew the procedure, the sheriff's office said.

A surveillance video taken by a Catholic church shows a man kneeling and apparently praying for several minutes before busting open a collection box that contained donations left in the small prayer chapel in northwest Houston.

“I wondered if he was praying, ‘Dear God, Please don’t let me get caught,’ or ‘Dear God, Please forgive me for what I’m about to do,’” said parish administrator John Naber.

William Joseph Johnson, 34, is in custody and charged with criminal mischief, according to court documents from the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. He is accused of targeting the Catholic church’s 24-hour prayer chapel for nearly eight months by stealing money from a sealed collection box on multiple occasions. The first known incident was caught on the church’s surveillance camera on July 28, the court document said.

An 80-year-old man was found in his Georgia home by a sheriff’s deputy Saturday night dead on the floor, bound with duct tape, and beaten with a shot gun.

Authorities in Haralson County, Georgia have arrested 29-year-old Ronnie Duane Lewis, who had lived with Thompson, and 26-year-old Mickey Ray Mulder Jr. in the death Ophir Thompson.

A sheriff's deputy went to the home of Ophir Thompson in Buchanan for a welfare check around 10 p.m. Saturday and found him dead on the floor.

A 13-year-old boy is feared to have killed himself after his adoption by a family broke down.

The body of the young Asian boy was discovered in his bed at Woodside House specialist children's home Darwen, Lancashire, on Monday lunchtime.

Police investigating the tragic youngster's death are looking into the possibility that he suffocated, adding that there were no suspicious circumstances. A formal cause of death is yet to be established.

The teen, known only as Alam, had seen his adoption arrangement with a Muslim family end three years ago.

A British schoolgirl has died two days before her seventh birthday after falling down stairs during a family holiday in Tenerife.

Heather Kennedy lost her fight for life yesterday morning - four days after being rushed to hospital with head injuries following the accident at her family's rented apartment on the Spanish island.

She had been in intensive care since losing her footing and plunging from stairs near the door to the second-floor flat as she ran to meet relatives.
