Oct. 8 trial set in slaying, child abduction

An Oct. 8 trial date has been set for a nurse accused of killing a Spring woman and kidnapping the victim’s baby in April. Verna McClain, 31, is charged with capital murder. A Montgomery County grand jury indicted the mother of three on Tuesday. McClain could face the death penalty if she is convicted. Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Kelly Blackburn said no decision has been made on whether to seek the death penalty. Prosecutors are still reviewing forensic evidence, Blackburn said. Authorities say McClain fatally shot Kala Golden Schuchardt on April 17 in the parking lot of a Spring pediatric office before snatching the woman’s 3-day-old son, Keegan Schuchardt. McClain allegedly took the baby to hide a miscarriage.

Website offers to delete its information about your arrest — if you pay about $200

A new website has published names, addresses and photographs of people recently arrested in Johnson County — but then offers to delete the information if the arrestee pays a fee of $199.99. Launched more than a month ago, the site created a public outcry this week after letters announcing the website started landing in arrestees’ mailboxes. “We have already started blabbing to the world about your release from jail,” the letter said. “And we want to make you aware of our services, as we kind of have a big mouth.”

Baby dead 'for a day' as mother chats on Internet forums

TOKYO — A woman whose baby boy lay dead for nearly a day while she chatted on Internet forums has been arrested in Japan, media and police said Friday. Yumiko Takahashi knew that 19-month-old Neo was running a high fever when she checked on him on the afternoon of June 24 last year but left him lying on his bed untended, police said. A post mortem examination revealed Neo had died around 2 pm on June 26th, police said. His mother found his lifeless body the following morning, newspaper reports said.

Woman charged with fatally beating husband with bat

Alice Tatum-Price, 51, and her husband — 51-year-old James Tatum — were drinking alcohol and arguing in their home in the 5400 block of West Cortez Street when she called police at 10:41 p.m. on May 12 because she “wanted to get away from her husband,” according to prosecutors. Tatum was angry at his wife and chased her around the house, then sat down on the couch, court documents said. At that point, Tatum-Price picked up a baseball bat and swung it at her unarmed husband, hitting him in the head twice.

Man convicted of killing his father, wife & ex-girlfriend in murder spree

The crime spree started when Amison strangled his wife, 38-year-old Tashika Smith, about 10 p.m. Dec. 11, 2009, in the 300 block of West 35th Street in south suburban Steger, authorities said. Amison then drove to the 1600 block of South 19th Avenue in Maywood and fatally shot his father, 63-year-old James Johnson, in the neck.

He then went to the 5400 block of South Marshfield Avenue in Chicago, where he kicked down the door and murdered his ex-girlfriend, 40-year-old Stephanie Reed. Prosecutors said Amison thought his wife was having an affair with his father, which sparked the killing spree. Police said the shooting initially left Amison’s father paralyzed from the neck down, but he died Jan. 3, 2011.

Netherlands man is informed of his father's suicide... and then realises he had earlier watched video of his death on Twitter

A Dutch man who viewed graphic online photos and video of a suicide was shocked to learn that the footage was of his own father's death. A group of teenage students were waiting on the platform of a train station in Driehuis, a city about 20 miles to the west of Amsterdam, when a man jumped in front of a train. They then took photos and recorded video of the bloody aftermath and posted it on Twitter.

The footage then went viral and ended up being forwarded to a man who, quite randomly, was the son of the victim. He did not realise at the time, however, that it was his father who had jumped. It was not until a short while later when he was contacted by police that he realised the grisly footage he had seen was of his father killing himself.

Nine-year-old boy with gun steals electric car

A gun toting nine-year-old took aim at shocked bystanders before stealing an electric car and embarking on a 30 km/h joyride that ended with him crashing at a roundabout in western Sweden. Two teenagers looking for a cheap thrill got a beatdown when a jogger who they assaulted turned out to be an expert in martial arts. According to Kval.com, Priscilla Dang was jogging in her Vancouver, Wash., neighbourhood last Friday when she was approached by two teens on their bikes.

One woman has been stabbed to death and another injured when they were attacked inside a primary school in Rotterdam on Friday afternoon, Dutch media report. But when they got to Simmons' house, Simmons and his accomplice, Timothy Milano, told Wolfe they did not have the drugs or the money, records showed. An argument erupted, and Milano fatally shot Wolfe with a .22-caliber rifle, records showed.

Simmons then hog-tied and locked Wolfe's girlfriend in a foot locker, removing her later to rape her and 'telling her that her life depended on how well she performed sexually,' the court document said. Afterward, Simmons put the woman back inside the box and went into the bathroom, where he dismembered and gutted Wolfe's body in the bathtub using knives he had sharpened at work, the records showed.

Simmons and Milano scattered the victim's remains in a bayou behind Simmons' property, according to documents. Wolfe's girlfriend managed to escape from the foot locker and ran to a neighbor's house to call police, records showed. Simmons was sentenced to death after being convicted in August 1997 of kidnapping, rape and capital murder. Milano was sentenced to life in prison.

LOS ANGELES -- An ex-con was sentenced to death today for the 2003 rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl, whose bound and burned body was discovered in an alley. A jury convicted Latece Megale Brown on April 11 of 17 felony counts, including the first-degree murder of Jacquies Williams and the kidnapping, rape and sodomy of five other victims, who ranged in age from 14 to 25 years old.

In addition to the death sentence in the Williams murder, Brown was also sentenced to 205 years to life in prison, plus two additional life sentences in connection with the other charges.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Thirty-six years ago, three men kidnapped a bus full of schoolchildren for ransom before entombing them in a San Joaquin Valley rock quarry. The 1976 crime has become part of California lore -- and many of those in the small town of Chowchilla, where it happened, thought those responsible would stay behind bars for life.

But on Wednesday, one of the three kidnappers was released from prison. Richard Allen Schoenfeld, 58, was released on parole to an undisclosed location after serving more than 35-years in state prison. He will be monitored 24 hours a day with a global positioning device.

After drunken driver kills son, mother billed for cleanup

GREENVILLE, S.C. - A drunken driver killed an Upstate women's son last year, and if the grief wasn't enough, she's had to deal with bills associated with the wreck, even for the cost of cleaning up her son's blood. A coroner called Loretta Robinson last June and told her that her oldest son, Justin Walker, died when his car was struck by a drunken driver on White Horse Road. "I never would have imagined getting that call," she said. "Never in one million years expected that."

Robinson looked Anna Gonzalez, the accused driver, in the eye in court Tuesday as Gonzalez pleaded guilty. The grieving mother then showed the judge the many bills she's had to pay, even though her son was not at fault. Robinson said she paid to have the wrecked car stored for months, in case there was a trial. "I had to pay to have the vehicle towed," she said. "I had to pay for the vehicle removed and to clean up the street from Justin's blood on the ground." Robinson said that was the bill that stung the most – paying $50 to have the street cleaned.

At least 40 killed as bus overturns in Haiti river

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — The government of Haiti says at least 40 people have drowned when a bus overturned in a rain-swollen river east of the southern city of Jeremie.

A statement issued by the office of President Michel Martelly says about 60 people were on the bus when the driver attempted to cross the Glace River. Local Civil Protection officials have recovered the bodies of 40 people and are still searching the area. The statement said nine people were either rescued from the submerged bus or managed to swim to safety.

'Snake Guy' gets life in prison for motel slaying

SAN ANTONIO - A long-term northeast-side motel resident known as "Snake Guy" who ambushed another resident in his room, shooting him in the face with a sawed-off shotgun, was sentenced Monday to life in prison. Julian Cedrick Bell, 31, was convicted by a jury earlier this month of murdering Jason Ross, 28, in June. Prosecutors said Bell's pride had been hurt because Ross rebuffed his overtures to hang out.
