Puerto Rican woman kills man after Facebook fight

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Police in Puerto Rico say a 27-year-old woman is suspected of killing her boyfriend after he became upset about her activities on Facebook. Lt. Candido Pagan says there were two children in the house when the killing occurred Saturday morning: a nearly 2-month-old girl and a 10-year-old boy. Pagan says both belonged to suspect Wilnilia Sanchez Falcon, but it's unclear if they witnessed the killing in the central mountain town of Comerio. Pagan says Sanchez is expected to be charged in the death of 25-year-old Jesus Rivera Algarin, who was stabbed in the torso.

Death details shock mother

Father-of-one Jack Davis, 30, was kidnapped and murdered last February in remote bush off the Wairakau Track, 14km north of Kaeo in Northland. Wayne Bracken, 35, and Neville Dangen, 24, have been on trial in the Whangarei High Court for kidnapping and murdering Davis. After seven weeks of evidence, and six hours of deliberation, the jury delivered a guilty verdict for Bracken. Dangen was found not guilty. Jack's mother Zelma Davis, of Mangere, told the Herald on Sunday of her horror at hearing how his limbs were hog-tied before he was driven into the bush where he was murdered with a thistle grubber.

She heard how Bracken emerged smiling from the bush "dripping with blood", before stripping to his underwear to burn his clothes. "It was devastating," Zelma said. "We learnt a lot of things about what happened to my son during the trial. It wasn't easy, we were shocked." Zelma said she stared at her son's killer who showed no remorse as he whistled, sang and pulled hand signals at her family. "He is one hell of an evil man who doesn't deserve to be in society with anyone else. He is all for himself, he doesn't care, he has no heart or soul."

Eyewitnesses tell how they saw plane covered in flames crash killing 19 in Nepalese capital

Witnesses have described how they heard the desperate 'wailing and screaming' of terrified passengers after a plane crashed in a fireball in the Nepalese capital killing seven Britons. Daniel Harold Rolling (May 26, 1954 – October 25, 2006), also known as The Gainesville Ripper, was an American serial killer who murdered five students in Gainesville, Florida. Known primarily for his role as the host of television's THE TWILIGHT ZONE, Rod Serling had one of the most exceptional and varied careers in television. As a writer, a producer, and for many years a teacher, Serling challenged the medium of television to reach for loftier artistic goals. The winner of more Emmy Awards for dramatic writing than anyone in history, Serling expressed a deep social conscience in nearly everything he did.

Born in Syracuse, New York in 1924, Rod Serling grew up in the small upstate city of Binghamton. The son of a butcher, he joined the army after graduating from high school in 1942. His experiences of the working-class life of New York, and the horrors of World War II enlivened in him a profound concern for a moral society. After returning from the service, Serling enrolled as a physical education student at Antioch College, but before long realized that he was destined for more creative endeavors.

Changing his major to English literature and drama, Serling began to try his hand at writing. As a senior, after marrying his college sweetheart, Carolyn Kramer, he won an award for a television script he had written. Encouraged by the award, Serling started writing for radio and television. Beginning in Cincinnati, he soon found a home for his unique style of realistic psychological dramas at CBS. By the early 1950s he was writing full-time and had moved his family closer to Manhattan.

Serling had his first big break with a television drama for NBC, called PATTERNS. Dealing with the fast-paced lives and ruthless people within the business world, PATTERNS was so popular it became the first television show to ever be broadcast a second time due to popularity. Throughout the 1950s he continued to write probing investigative dramas about serious issues. He was often hounded by the conservative censors for his uncompromising attention to issues such as lynching, union organizing, and racism. Television dramas including REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT and A TOWN HAS TURNED TO DUST, are still considered some of the best writing ever done for television.

Fed up with the difficulties of writing about serious issues on the conservative networks, Serling turned to science fiction and fantasy. Through an ingenious mixture of morality fable and fantasy writing, he was able to circumvent the timidity and conservatism of the television networks and sponsors. Self-producing a series of vignettes that placed average people in extraordinary situations, Serling could investigate the moral and political questions of his time. He found that he could address controversial subjects if they were cloaked in a veil of fantasy, saying "I found that it was all right to have Martians saying things Democrats and Republicans could never say."

The series was called THE TWILIGHT ZONE and was incredibly popular, winning Serling three Emmy Awards. As the host and narrator of the show, he became a household name and his voice seemed always a creepy reminder of a world beyond our control. The show lasted for five seasons, and during that time Serling wrote more than half of the one hundred and fifty-one episodes. But for Serling, television was an inherently problematic medium—requiring the concessions of commercials and time restrictions.

For much of the 1960s and into the 1970s Serling turned to the big screen, writing films that included a remake of REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT (1962), THE YELLOW CANARY (1963), and ASSAULT ON A QUEEN (1966). His most famous, however, was the classic PLANET OF THE APES (1968), co-written with Michael Wilson. Similar to his early work on THE TWILIGHT ZONE, THE PLANET OF THE APES was a moralistic tale of contemporary life told through a science-fiction fantasy in which Apes have taken over the world. Dealing with question of how we act as a society and how we view ourselves as moral beings, PLANET OF THE APES was a culmination of Serling's career-long interests as a writer.

By the early 1970s, he found a job teaching in Ithaca, New York. Continuing to write for television, he sought to impart a sense of moral responsibility and artistic integrity to the new generation of television writers. In June of 1975, he died of a heart attack. Today, more than twenty-five years after his death, Serling's legacy continues to grow. His television and cinematic works have reached cult status—enlivening a new interest in one of the great early writers of American television.

Australian Roman Catholic Church admits child sex abuse

The latest wave of Muslim hysteria and violence has now spread to over twenty countries. The walls of our embassies and consulates have been breached, their precincts abandoned to triumphant mobs, and many people have been murdered—all in response to an unwatchable Internet video titled “Innocence of Muslims.” Whether over a film, a cartoon, a novel, a beauty pageant, or an inauspiciously named teddy bear, the coming eruption of pious rage is now as predictable as the dawn. This is already an old and boring story about old, boring, and deadly ideas. And I fear it will be with us for the rest of our lives.

Mark Lucas Thompson, 20, was indicted for animal cruelty and petit larceny, but will not stand trial after a judge ruled he was mentally ill. Driver, 14, kills mother and eight-year-old sister in three car crash

A 14-year-old girl was behind the wheel of a car involved in a multi-vehicle crash which killed her mother and eight-year-old sister. Destiny Ensslin, of Fort Meade, Florida, was driving her mother Dawn's Chevrolet Cobalt when she drove into the path of a Dodge Caravan, the impact of which sent both vehicles crashing into a third car. Destiny's eight-year-old sister Delaney, who was riding in the back seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Destiny did not have a license to drive the car.

Chef Accused in Wife's Murder Said He Slow-Cooked Body

David Viens' wife, Dawn Viens, disappeared in October 2009. In March 2011, David Viens told sheriff's investigators why they hadn't been able to find the body of his wife, who'd been missing for nearly a year and half. "I just slowly cooked it and I ended up cooking her for four days," said Viens, a chef who ran a restaurant in Lomita, according to an interview played for jurors on Tuesday. Sgt. Richard Garcia asked Viens what happened the night of Oct. 18, the last time his wife was seen. "For some reason I just got violent," Viens said in the interview.

Two sisters have been killed in a car crash in Morocco while on the ‘adventure of a lifetime’. Tara Darlington, 23, and her 21-year-old sister Pippa – described by their parents as best friends – died when their rented car collided with another vehicle early on Monday morning. Their friend Joshua Stump, 21, was seriously injured and is in a coma in hospital, police said yesterday. The accident happened near the north-western city of Rabat during a holiday before the sisters began their final year of university.

'Heartbroken' chef fatally stabs himself in the neck in front of colleagues during dinner hour at restaurant

A Florida chef died in an apparent suicide after stabbing himself in the neck in front of horrified colleagues during dinner business hours last week. According to police, 46-year-old Stephan Stolze picked up a large knife in the kitchen of Steamer's Restaurant and Tiki Bar in Key Largo and walked into the dining area with the weapon held to the right side of his neck. Restaurant worker Don Barton told investigators he followed the chef and came across traces of blood on the floor and on a table, Miami Herald reported.

The girl was pronounced dead in hospital after she suffered serious injuries in the play area at the £42-a-day York College Nursery, York, yesterday afternoon. A decade before he was charged with murder, a 2-year-old Cristian Fernandez was found naked and dirty, wandering a South Florida street. The body of Katherine Dulchie Towner, 28, was found covered with a quilt in the passenger seat of a car next to a dirt road outside Strathalbyn, south of Adelaide, in April 2011. During a trial in the South Australian Supreme Court, prosecutors said her partner, Jason Lee Gardiner, 33, had caused Ms Towner serious injuries, including a tear to her liver, when he bashed her. Illinois woman, 83, charged in hit-and-run death of 6-year-old boy

YIDA, South Sudan (AP) — South Sudan says 16 people have been killed by an outbreak of Hepatitis E in three refugee camps near the border with Sudan. According to a statement released Thursday by South Sudan's Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization and the U.N. refugee agency, the outbreak was first detected late July in Jamam refugee camp, in Upper Nile State's Maban County. The statement says the disease has spread to Yusuf Batil and Gendrassa refugee camps in Maban county and more than 380 confirmed and suspected cases have been reported.

OC Pastor Sentenced to 330 Years For Molesting Boys

LAGUNA HILLS, Calif. (KTLA) -- A pastor was sentenced on Friday to 330 years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting five young parishioner boys in his Lake Forest apartment, the Los Angeles Times reported. Oscar D. Perez Perez, of Lake Forest, was found guilty of 22 felony counts of lewd acts upon a child under 14, four felony counts of lewd acts on a child, and sentencing enhancement allegations for lewd acts against multiple victims. Perez, 69, faces a maximum sentence of 330 years to life in state prison and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration when he is sentenced.

Between 2007 and 2011, Perez sexually assaulted the five victims between the ages of 9 and 15 years old on one or more occasions while they were visiting or sleeping over at the defendant's apartment. The sexual assault against the victims varied, and included sodomy, oral copulation, sexual penetration, touching of the victim's penis and/or buttocks, kissing, and hugging.

6 burned by sulfuric acid spill in S China

NANNING - Six people, including a one-year-old boy, were burned in a sulfuric acid spill in South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region on Friday, local police said Saturday. The accident happened at around 10 am Friday when the sulfuric acid was being unloaded from a truck at a plant in Xingning district of the provincial capital Nanning, said local traffic police. Over 2 tons of sulfuric acid flew through the gate of the plant and onto a busy road outside, toppling several motorcycles and injuring at least six people, police said. The one-year-old sustained serious burns covering 19 percent of his body, they said. An initial investigation shows that an improper unloading practice caused the spill.

Naked, bloody man gnaws on woman's head while screaming like an animal in terrifying rampage

A 20-year-old Pennsylvania man, found naked and bleeding profusely, is facing assault charges after allegedly gnawing on the head of a woman during a zombie-like attack akin to the 'Miami Cannibal' who was shot and killed in May. State police used a stun gun on Richard Cimino Jr. early Friday after two women reported he was 'screaming like an animal' and 'began to gnaw' on one of their heads. The women managed to escape without serious injuries and called police.

Bus collides with truck, killing 51 in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A bus and truck collided and burst into flames in eastern Afghanistan on Friday, killing at least 51 people. The collision occurred in Ghazni province on a highway that links the Afghan capital of Kabul with Kandahar, the largest city in the south. At least 51 of the 56 passengers on the bus were killed, said Gen. Zarawar Zahid, the provincial police chief.

Two More Young Tourists Suffer Mysterious Deaths in Asia

PHI PHI ISLAND, Thailand -- A string of mysterious tourist deaths in Southeast Asia, which investigators suspect may be from poisoning, have left friends and family desperate for answers. Kari Bowerman, 27, and Cathy Huynh, 26, were backpacking in Vietnam while on break from their jobs teaching English in South Korea. On July 30, the friends were admitted to Khanh Hoa General Hospital in Nha Trang. Both were vomiting, had difficulty breathing and showed signs of severe dehydration. Huynh was eventually released from the hospital. She returned later that night to hear the devastating news -- three hours after being admitted, Bowerman had gone into respiratory failure and died. Two days later, Huynh was dead. The travelers' stories are just the latest in a string of mysterious tourist deaths in Southeast Asia.

3 stabbed at pre-wedding meeting; police kill suspect

Police officers shot and killed a knife-wielding man after he stabbed three people and then charged officers outside a home in southeast Houston near downtown late Thursday night.

Police said the man, whose name has not been released, died at the scene. The officers, who have not been identified, were not hurt. The people who were stabbed were rushed to nearby hospitals. One was in critical condition while another was in serious condition. The third person had minor injuries. Their names were not released.

Police nab 2 teens suspected of killing 7

QUJING, Yunnan - Police in Southwest China's Yunnan province have arrested two teenagers suspected of killing seven people, including a pregnant woman, authorities said Friday. Fu Zhenli, 17, and Liu Qizhi, 18, were detained on September 6 in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, according to police in Qujing city of Yunnan province. The two teenagers, both from Wugang city of Hunan province, were suspected of killing a pregnant hotel owner surnamed Wu and her two-year-old daughter on August 30 in Fuyuan county, Yunnan province. Police then found another victim, Tang, who was believed to have been killed by the same criminals. After being taken into police custody, police learned that the duo had also killed two couples in Hunan and Guangdong provinces in August. An initial investigation found that the killers, who were classmates in high school, committed the crimes for money.

Workers killed as elevator plummets 34 floors to ground

Nineteen workers at a construction site in Wuhan, Hubei province, died on Thursday after the elevator they were using fell 100 meters to the ground. The tragedy happened around 1 pm when 19 painters at the construction site of Donghujingyuan, a residential real estate project, were taking an elevator, according to the local fire department. A malfunction occurred as the elevator was going up and it began to accelerate, local media reported.

Gunman shot pet cat in the street leaving it to hobble home in agony before vets were forced to amputate his injured leg

Police are hunting a thug who gunned down a pet cat in the street and left it with such severe injuries that its front leg had to be amputated. The brute shot eight-year-old Toby with an air rifle from a range of up to 50 feet while he was hunting field mice in farmland near his home in Cheshire. Despite his wounds, the whimpering moggie managed to limp back home and was later found covered with blood in his owner’s back garden.
