'Drunken' teen driver kills five family members and leaves another two in a critical condition after early morning crash

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in a southern Nevada crash early on Saturday that killed five members of a California family and injured the suspect and three others. Jean Soriano of California was booked into the Clark County Detention Center after he was treated and released at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said. Two stabbed to death in Chiba home

CHIBA — Police said Sunday that two people were fatally stabbed and a third remains in a serious condition after they were stabbed at their home in Futtsu, Chiba Prefecture. According to police, a woman called emergency services at about 4:30 a.m., asking for an ambulance. TBS reported that police and an ambulance rushed to the home where they found three people bleeding from knife wounds. They were identified as Takuya Yamaguchi, 71, his wife Chieko, 66, and their son Naoshi, 36. They were taken to hospital where Takuya and Naoshi were pronounced dead, police said, adding that Chieko remains in a serious condition. Neighbors were quoted as saying they rarely saw Chieko or Naoshi. Police said they will know more once they can question Chieko. They have not yet determined whether the stabbings were the result of family trouble or whether an intruder came in from outside.

A huge search and rescue operation has failed to locate any survivors of a Tibetan landslide that buried 83 mine workers under 2 million cubic metres of earth. Search teams using sniffer dogs and radar combed the mountainside throughout the night after a three-kilometre section of land buried a copper mine workers' camp in Maizhokunggar county, east of Tibetan capital Lhasa. After a day of searching, Chinese officials made the grim announcement that no survivors had been found at the suite of the landslide, which struck about 6:00am Friday (local time).

17 killed in Tanzanian building collapse

Officials in Tanzania say at least 17 people, including two children, have been killed when a building collapsed in the city of Dar es Salaam. Eighteen people have been rescued from the rubble of the 16-storey building which came crashing down on Friday, while dozens are still missing. The multi-storey building was under construction in Tanzania's economic capital when it collapsed. Regional commissioner Saidi Mecky Sadicky says rescuers were still looking for two children. Several dozen people in all are still missing around the site, which was littered with huge chunks of concrete.

A Brazilian doctor who was charged with killing seven patients to free up beds at a hospital intensive care unit may have been responsible for as many as 300 deaths, according to a Health Ministry investigator. Prosecutors said Dr. Virginia Soares de Souza and her medical team administered muscle relaxing drugs to patients, then reduced their oxygen supply, causing them to die of asphyxia at the Evangelical Hospital in the southern city of Curitiba. De Souza, a 56-year-old widow, was arrested last month and charged with seven counts of aggravated first degree murder. Three other doctors, three nurses and a physiotherapist who worked under De Souza have also been charged with murder.

Man arrested for trying to kill woman with poisoned shoes

TOKYO — A man who allegedly tried to kill a woman he was stalking by putting poison in her shoes was arrested Thursday, police and reports said. The woman, a colleague, did not die, but developed gangrene in part of her left foot and her five toes had to be amputated. The hospital notified the police. Tatsujiro Fukasawa, 40, allegedly put hydrofluoric acid, a highly caustic chemical, in her shoes in December last year, a police spokeswoman said. He is believed to have obtained the chemical, which is used in oil refining or to dissolve rock, at his workplace in Shizuoka. Fukusawa has denied the allegation, Jiji Press said, citing local investigative sources. Hydrofluoric acid can be absorbed through the skin into the blood, and can lead to systemic failure, including heart attacks.

The attack happened on the top deck of the 57 bus as it left the Silverburn shopping centre in Pollok, Glasgow, at about 22:30 last Friday night. The 14-year-old sat downstairs with a friend but then moved to the upper deck where she was assaulted and raped by two men. Police have appealed for other passengers to come forward. Single mother Sanae Nakamura regularly left her daughter, 3, and one-year-old son, in the apartment in western Osaka while she spent the night at her boyfriend’s house, reports said. She had begin leaving them alone in March 2010, the Asahi Shimbun said, adding that sometime in early June that year she stopped coming home. But when she did eventually return later that month the two tots were dead, the paper said. Nakamura was convicted of murder by Japan’s lower courts and sentenced to 30 years at earlier hearings, which found she had known that leaving the children without sufficient food would kill them.

Three young men committed suicide together in Dongguan, Guangdong province, while two others who also planned to kill themselves with the group but backed out were taken into custody, local police said on Tuesday afternoon. Three men were found dead in a rented house on Monday. The two men who backed out of the plot were caught fleeing the home by police. The teenager, who lived with his mother in a small apartment in Kawasaki, then kept the body parts in the bathtub, which he filled with water, before starting to dump it piece by piece in plastic bags, the report said. He told police he “didn’t like her” and she was an “ordinary person”, the Sankei reported, quoting an unnamed investigator. He also said he was interested in the dissection of a human body, the Yomiuri and Mainichi newspapers reported. The suspect, who has not been named as he is still a minor under Japanese law, was arrested on March 14 after a relative visited the apartment and found some of the body parts. The murder is believed to have been committed about two weeks previously.

Bronx teen crushed to death in dump truck

Bronx teen Luis Camarillo was crushed to death in back of a private recycling truck Saturday in a horrific accident. Police said Camarillo, 18, of the Bronx was working at the back of the truck at a recycling plant in DUMBO at about 10:30 when the accident happened. A man previously charged with having child pornography cut an electronic monitoring device off his ankle before carjacking a woman, fatally stabbing her and raping her 10-year-old daughter. David J. Renz abducted the school librarian and her daughter as they left a gymnastics class at a mall in the Syracuse suburb of Clay, about 150 miles west of Albany, on Thursday night. Renz bound both victims, raped the girl and drove a short distance to a spot where the girl escaped and was found by a passing motorist, troopers said. The motorist told 911 dispatchers he saw a man running away from the scene, allowing police to quickly send in officers on the ground and a sheriff's helicopter in the air. Renz was caught a short time later near a wooded area. They believe Renz tied up the woman and the girl and then raped the 10-year-old in a deserted area of the mall parking lot shortly before 9pm on March 14. HIROSHIMA — At least two people died and five others were injured Thursday when a man believed to be a Chinese worker went on a stabbing rampage at a fish processing firm in Japan, police and press reports said. The man in his 30s used a knife and shovel to attack several people at the firm in Etajima, a port near the western city of Hiroshima, at about 4:30 p.m., a prefectural police spokesman said by telephone. “The number of injured may possibly rise,” he said. Three men, described as Arabic, stopped her. One was around 70-years-old, and the other two were significantly younger. They are alleged to have grabbed her, before taking her to a secluded spot. One of the men held her down as the others took it in turns to rape her. Following the attack, she walked back to her apartment but could not gain entry or even contact her boyfriend because all her possessions had been stolen. A passerby contacted police after finding her collapsed on the ground, outside the apartment, at 3am.

Saudi Arabia executes 7 men after appeals rejected

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Seven Saudi men convicted of theft, looting and armed robbery were beheaded on Wednesday, according to the country's official news agency, more than a week after their families and a rights group appealed to the king for clemency. The executions took place in Abha, a city in the southern region of Asir, the Saudi Press Agency said. The south has been marginalized and suffered discrimination by the powerful central region where the capital, Riyadh, and the holy shrines of Mecca and Medina are located. The seven were arrested in 2006 and received death sentences in 2009, a Saudi newspaper reported at the time.

The case was back in focus after Human Rights Watch earlier this month called for the sentences to be canceled because the men were juveniles at the time of their arrest. One of the men told The Associated Press in early March that he was only 15 when he was arrested as part of a ring that stole jewelry in 2004 and 2005. Nasser al-Qahtani said he was tortured to confess and had no access to lawyers. Al-Qahtani said that during the years-long trial, he only faced the judge three times and when the men tried to complain to the judge about the torture or show torture marks on their bodies, they were ignored.
