Oct. 8 trial set in slaying, child abduction

An Oct. 8 trial date has been set for a nurse accused of killing a Spring woman and kidnapping the victim’s baby in April. Verna McClain, 31, is charged with capital murder. A Montgomery County grand jury indicted the mother of three on Tuesday. McClain could face the death penalty if she is convicted. Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Kelly Blackburn said no decision has been made on whether to seek the death penalty. Prosecutors are still reviewing forensic evidence, Blackburn said. Authorities say McClain fatally shot Kala Golden Schuchardt on April 17 in the parking lot of a Spring pediatric office before snatching the woman’s 3-day-old son, Keegan Schuchardt. McClain allegedly took the baby to hide a miscarriage.
