Guitar shop founder accused of killing girlfriend took an ax to her head, prosecutors told judge

The founder of Carmine Street Guitars in the West Village took an ax to his girlfriend’s head and plunged a knife into her chest, prosecutors said at his arraignment on Friday. Dennis Guglielmo, 69, who was a fixture in the West Village, was charged with second-degree murder and weapons possession for the fatal attack on Alice Birnbaum, 59, inside an apartment they shared on Downing St. A judge remanded him and ordered a psychiatric evaluation to be performed. Guglielmo “made admissions at the scene,” where investigators recovered the weapons, Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Gaffney said. The knife was protruding from Birnbaum’s lifeless body when police arrived at the apartment, according to a criminal complaint against Guglielmo. The complaint alleges Guglielmo “hit the woman several times in the head with an ax and stabbed her with a knife.”
