NIAGARA FALLS -- Two youths got more than they bargained for Friday when they tried to rob an elderly man near the Apple Walk apartments, city police said.
The 75-year-old victim, a maintenance worker for the housing project, was loading tools into his van about 11 a.m. after completing a repair project at one of the units, police said. Two boys, estimated to be between 12 and 16 years of age, then approached and asked the man for a cigarette.
When he told them he didn't smoke, he was attacked and punched in the face by the larger of the two suspects. The victim grabbed one of his hammers, however, and managed to inflict several blows upon the would-be thieves before they took off running down nearby Profit Lane.
The victim was treated for a cut to his face and scrapes to his hands and knees, police said.

"He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches."
"Being is substance and life; life manifests by movement; movement is perpetuated by equilibrium; equilibrium is therefore the law of immortality.
"The doctrine of equality!... But there exists no more poisonous poison: for it seems to be preached by justice itself, while it is the end of justice.... "Equality for equals, inequality for unequals" that would be the true voice of justice: and, what follows from it, "Never make equal what is unequal."
