LAS CRUCES -- A 2-year-old boy is being treated for a fractured skull at an El Paso hospital, and his mother's boyfriend is charged with inflicting the injuries.
Jason Narvaez, 25, of the 1800 block of Locust Street, was charged with a first-degree felony count of intentional child abuse resulting in great bodily harm.
The boy was listed in stable condition Friday at University Medical Center in El Paso.
Shortly after 3:30 a.m. Friday, police were called to Memorial Medical Center where the child was being treated for what appeared to be a head injury. The boy was subsequently airlifted to El Paso.
Detectives learned that the 2-year-old's mother was at work Thursday and Narvaez was caring for the boy. At some point late Thursday morning, Narvaez allegedly became upset because the child would not allow himself to be dressed.
Detectives believe that Narvaez then picked up the boy and threw him down a hallway, causing the skull fracture.
The boy showed obvious signs of injury, his head was noticeably swollen, and he was nauseous for much of Thursday afternoon and evening, according to a news release. Not until the boy's mother returned from work early Friday morning did she realize the extent of his injuries and insisted on seeking medical treatment.
Narvaez, who was also convicted in 2009 for drunken driving, was transported to the Do-a Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $25,000.
