Priest gets 50 years for taking sexually explicit photos of young girls in his parish after church cover-up

A Roman Catholic priest who took sexually explicit photos of five young girls in his parish - including a two-year-old - has been sentenced to 50 years behind bars. Reverend Shawn Ratigan, 47, pleaded guilty to five counts of producing or attempting to produce child porn last year after church officials sent police flash drive from his laptop containing hundreds of images of children, most of them clothed, focusing on their crotch areas in 2011. He also molested three of the girls as he photographed them, including the buttocks of a two-year-old and the labia and buttocks of a five and nine-year-old. While the victims' families welcomed U.S. District Judge Gary Fenner's decision, the Kansas-area priest was adamant he only deserved a 15 year sentence.

'I know God has forgiven me and my soul is in good shape. I can live at my cousin's house in Nebraska forever out in the middle of nowhere if that's what it takes,' he said. 'I hope that you won’t sentence me to a life of hell on earth. 'Prison is hell, and I know I deserve 15 years. But 50 years? Come on, I don’t think so.' 

There is no parole in the federal prison system, meaning Ratigan will be 97 when his sentence is over. 'Your conduct shows, Mr. Ratigan, that you are a chronic sexual abuser,' Fenner said before imposing the sentence, according to kctv5.com. 'You violated the trust of individuals to an extent that is devastating.' Ratigan’s sensational case led to multiple civil lawsuits against the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph and criminal charges against its leader, Bishop Robert W. Finn.
