The victim and her 22-year-old friend were preparing for a youth service evening at the church in Samson Street on Friday night when the attack occurred.
Police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said: “The 17-year-old was at the church alone at around 7pm when she noticed a man standing in front of the church. She asked him if she could help him, at which point he asked for some water.
“Her friend, a 22-year-old lady, then came to the church to help her with the preparations for the service and that is when he [the man] gained entry into the church,” Van Rensburg said.
“He was armed with a knife and tied both of them up. He then took the 17-year-old to the toilet where he raped her. When some other churchgoers arrived for the service he fled on foot. He took two cellphones with him,” she said.
