A YOUNG man wielding a knife attacked bystanders in southern China, killing one person and injuring 11, state media reported, in the latest random attack in the country.
The 19-year-old suspect, who was not identified, attacked people on Wednesday in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, the Guangzhou Daily reported on Friday.
Police arrested him and were investigating a motive.
A police officer with Jinli Township who gave only his surname, He, said the attacker ``hacked and injured some people'' but declined to give more details.
Calls to the press office of the Zhaoqing Public Security Bureau and Guangzhou Public Security Bureau rang unanswered.
China has been stunned in recent months by a series of violent assaults by assailants armed with knives, many of whom targeted kindergartens and primary schools.
Fears over copycat attacks led the central government to limit coverage about the assaults, which have left about two dozen people dead and more than 50 wounded.
The grisly attacks in China - including a courthouse shooting, school stabbings and a slashing rampage on a train - have forced the public and officials to confront what experts say is the long-hidden problem of increased violent crime.
