Teen jailed over father's bizarre murder

06/18/2010

A Sydney judge has described the shooting murder of a man in his bed as a bizarre and terrible crime.

A teenager has been sentenced to at least 11 years jail for the 2008 murder on a property at Mudgee in New South Wales' central west.

The court heard the offender was 17 when he went into his 47-year-old father's bedroom, turned the light on and shot him.

He watched television all night and phoned his mother to tell her the next morning.

Justice Peter Johnson said the teenager has been getting treatment for psychiatric disorders and has an unstable family history.

The court heard he resented his father because of a history of perceived physical abuse.

He will serve some of his sentence in juvenile detention and be eligible for parole in 2020.
