A jealous businessman killed his ex-girlfriend and her new lover in a 'sustained and ferocious' attack as they made desperate 999 calls for help, a court heard.

A jury was yesterday played recordings of the emergency calls made by Karen Brown, 39, and her partner Kenneth Snell, 65, as they were allegedly attacked by John Moody.

Norwich Crown Court was told Mr Moody, 45, had driven to Mr Snell's house in a jealous rage armed with a knife and hammer after learning his ex girlfriend had moved in with her new partner.

Moody allegedly shouted 'why did you lie' and 'tell me why you lied' as he stabbed Ms Brown 13 times in the garden of the bungalow house.

He then allegedly killed Mr Snell, a fellow member of the Eaton Golf Club in Norwich, by stabbing him in the heart.

In a 999 call made by Ms Brown on Halloween last year, she is heard to say: 'I have got an intruder who is iolent, who is aggressive. I don't know who it is.'

She then frantically shouts the name 'John Moody' twice to the call operator and is heard to say: 'You don't want to do this, do you? Not really.'

Five minutes later in a separate call Mr Snell told the operator: 'I have been attacked by a man and he has already hit me over the head several times and he is attacking my girlfriend.'

He told the operator the attacker's name was 'Mr John Moody' and asked why Ms Brown is being attacked by Moody, he replies: 'Because it's his ex-girlfriend.'

He then added: 'Please come quick.'
Police found Mr Snell's body in the hallway of his home.

Moody was arrested the next day at a hotel where he had spent the night with his current girlfriend.

Prosecutor Graham Parkins QC said: 'This was an unprovoked and premeditated attack by Mr Moody, who at the time of the actual killings and up to about an hour before then was in a rage.

'He had lost his self-control, lost his temper and was bent on revenge against Karen and the new man in her life.'

He said Moody was 'driven by feelings of rage and revenge.'

The court heard Moody and Ms Brown had been in a violent 12-year relationship that ended in August 2008.

Mr Parkins told the court that the pair had shared various business interests, jointly owning properties and a sandwich shop in Norwich.

He said they appeared outwardly to be an 'ambitious couple seeking to do well in life, hard-working and determined to succeed in difficult times.'

Moody was a keen sportsman and well-known in squash and golfing circles in Norwich.

But the court heard he was a 'controlling man' with a 'dark side' who "frequently and over long periods of time' was violent towards Ms Brown.

After Ms Brown ended the relationship, Moody 'pestered' her to take him back without success, jurors were told.

Moody denies murdering Ms Brown and Mr Snell but admits manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility.

The court heard that he told psychiatrists he had 'no memory of the killings.'

The case continues.
