Bears being held to harvest their bile in China are starving themselves to death as their only means of escaping their captivity.
Bile bears - also known as battery bears - are kept in captivity in China and Vietnam to harvest bile, a digestive juice produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder, for sale as an ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine.
Asiatic black bears are the most commonly used on bear bile farms and are now listed as vulnerable on the World Conservation Union's Red List of Threatened Animals.
