MEADOWS OF DAN, Va. -- Police say a North Carolina man who fell 80 feet off a cliff at a Virginia resort apparently lost his footing while preparing to have his photograph taken.
Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith says 82-year-old Fred McKinley of Dobson, N.C., was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident occurred Thursday in a scenic area at Primland resort in Meadows of Dan.
Patrick County emergency services coordinator Steve Allen says Sidden apparently crossed a guard rail at the site. The victim lost his footing when he went around a tree, glanced at someone on the other side of the guard rail, and went back around the tree.
Allen says Primland has a good safety record.
