A simple call for Arlington Heights police to check out a suspicious odor turned into a grisly death investigation when a foot was seen protruding from a plastic bag left in an alley, officials said today.
Police were called about 4:30 p.m. Friday to check out a plastic bag next to a garbage container at the Marketview Apartments on the 0-99 block of North Dryden Place in the northwest suburb, according to a news release sent today by Cmdr. Kenneth Galinski of the Arlington Heights police.
After seeing the human foot, responding officers sealed off the area and summoned additional help. Investigators at the Cook County medical examiner's office determined the bag contained the lower half of an adult white male, with the body separated just above the pelvis by an undetermined cutting instrument, police said.
After talking to area residents, police believe the remains were most likely deposited near the garbage container sometime after 7 a.m. on Wednesday. Investigators are still trying to identify the remains, and are checking active missing persons reports.

"He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches."
"Being is substance and life; life manifests by movement; movement is perpetuated by equilibrium; equilibrium is therefore the law of immortality.
"The doctrine of equality!... But there exists no more poisonous poison: for it seems to be preached by justice itself, while it is the end of justice.... "Equality for equals, inequality for unequals" that would be the true voice of justice: and, what follows from it, "Never make equal what is unequal."
