Melissa Huckaby, the woman accused of killing 8-year-old Sandra Cantu last year, is scheduled to be sentenced today.
Huckaby, 28, pleaded guilty to killing Sandra, who was a playmate of Huckaby's daughter, in March 2009 in Tracy.
Huckaby could face 25 years to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
In a related manner, the judge in the case earlier has denied a media request to release details of the murder of the young girl.
Judge Linda Lofthus noted that the case was not over, and she wanted to preserve a plea deal reached with Huckaby and the integrity of the court process.
Lofthus said she would reconsider the request after sentencing.
The Associated Press, Bay Area News Group and the Record of Stockton filed a court motion May 12 challenging Lofthus' decision to keep the gag order in place after Huckaby's guilty plea.
Sandra Cantu's family also opposed the request.
The prosecutor said earlier that the public has a right to know some details to understand how the plea deal was reached.

"He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches."
"Being is substance and life; life manifests by movement; movement is perpetuated by equilibrium; equilibrium is therefore the law of immortality.
"The doctrine of equality!... But there exists no more poisonous poison: for it seems to be preached by justice itself, while it is the end of justice.... "Equality for equals, inequality for unequals" that would be the true voice of justice: and, what follows from it, "Never make equal what is unequal."
