SHAUN Burke used a large dildo to repeatedly whack a woman over the head in a dispute over ownership of a pet dog.
He wore a leather gimp mask during the attack.
He stole the small Lhasa Apsa dog, called Apso, took it to a nearby park and taped it to the trunk of a palm tree by the neck, killing it.
Judge David Searles described the facts of Burke's case as grotesque and said the assault on the woman had severe emotional consequences for her.
Burke, 40, a diesel fitter, pleaded guilty in the District Court to five charges including burglary involving assault causing bodily harm, and stealing and killing a dog at night.
Burke was the friend of Andergrove resident Narelle Carey's male partner, Graham Barba, who had given her the pet dog.
After the couple separated, a misguided Shaun Burke, who was on drugs and alcohol at the time, tried to get the dog back for his mate.
He went to Ms Carey's home on October 12, 2008, with a cage, but Ms Carey stopped him from taking the dog.
He grabbed her by the throat and squeezed it for about five seconds and also damaged a door at her home.
Three months later, on January 12, 2009, he broke in at 3.30am by getting through a security screen.
Disguised in the leather gimp mask he was discovered by Ms Carey's 19-year-old son, who chased him around the house until the son ran out.
Burke then bludgeoned Ms Carey with the large plastic dildo, which was wrapped in duct tape to harden it. She suffered numerous facial bruises, large lumps and pain.
He grabbed the dog, took it away and killed it.
Police took swabs from Burke's hands and the dead dog's mouth and matched the fluids using DNA technology.
The dildo and mask were found in the nearby park.
Judge Searles said the incidents were clearly premeditated.
Burke was jailed for three years, to be released on May 11 next year.
A woman who had only met Burke that night, Tammy Langwe, 22, pleaded guilty to being an accessory to the burglary.
Langwe had knocked on the front door of the residence, to create a diversion, while Burke broke in.
Langwe was placed on probation for two years.
The court was told the bashing victim has since left Mackay and now lives in fear of noises each night.
