An 84-year-old homeowner could face criminal charges after fatally shooting a 75-year-old man he says broke into his home and assaulted him.

Investigators say the family of the alleged intruder, 75-year-old Ed Stevens, reported that he had dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Police say no charges have been filed against Hamilton, Ohio homeowner Charles Foster, though it’s possible the Butler County prosecutor’s office could present the case to a grand jury.

Suicide bomber kills dozens in attack on police bus in the heart of Syrian capital Damascus

A suicide bomber has killed at least 25 people and wounded dozens more in central Damascus.

Syrian state television showed footage of what appeared to be damaged police bus alongside body parts, bloodstains and broken glass from today's blast in the Maidan district.

People can be heard shouting that this was the work of terrorists.

Several riot police shields were visible in the wrecked bus, which was one of a number of vehicles with smashed windows.

Six children, a man and five Nato troops were killed in southern Afghanistan today by explosives hidden in a pile of rubbish and a series of roadside bombs.

The children were rummaging through the rubbish for food scraps and bottles in the southern province of Uruzgon when a blast killed them, police spokesman Farid Ayal said. A civilian man also died in the blast.

Four other children were wounded by the explosion in Trinkot, the provincial capital about 250miles south-west of Kabul.

'Cowardly and despicable' thief took crashed bike as cyclist lay dying in canal just yards away

A callous thief stole a man’s bike as he lay dying in a canal just yards away.

‘Despicable’ Adam Lowther, 22, took the bicycle belonging to Michael Houghton, 51, without stopping to help the cyclist who was lying face down in the stretch of water, an inquest heard.

The hearing was told Lowther didn’t call for help because he had run out of battery charge on his phone.

He also claimed that as he thought the man was already dead there was little point in trying to help.

Instead he simply rode off on the bike before selling it for £20.

Two young brothers drowned in an irrigation canal after one tried in vain to save the other when he fell in.

Authorities say six-year-old Calib Ontario Love, who suffered from autism, slipped into the canal in Maricopa, 30 miles south of Phoenix, Arizona, on Sunday afternoon.

His ten-year-old brothers Anthony Michael Love and Emmanuel Stower slid down the steep embankment to save him but neither knew how to swim.

Detectives are hunting for her ex-boyfriend after police said they are treating the murder as a 'domestic' incident.
