A homeowner has been stabbed to death in his own living room after he confronted a gang trying to steal his television.
Keith Redpath, 46, was attacked in his bungalow before collapsing in the street outside.
The father of one was taken to Sunderland Royal Infirmary after a passer-by called an ambulancebut he died later from a single stab wound to his chest.
Two brothers have been charged with murder in connection with the incident.
Ryan Ferguson, 18, and Anthony Ferguson, 34, both Sunderland, will appear before Sunderland magistrates today.
Two other men, aged 21 and 33, have been released on police bail.
Northumbria Police said a number of people forced their way into Mr Redpath's home in the Hendon area of Sunderland, damaging the front door, at around 2am on Saturday.
A spokesman said the offenders attacked the victim before taking his flat-screen TV.
A television matching the description of the one stolen was later recovered from a property nearby.
Mr Redpath's son, Callum, paid tribute to his father, who worked as a roofer.
Callum, 20, of Ryhope, near Sunderland, said: ‘My dad was a much-loved, lovely man, and we all cared deeply about him. He was a great dad.
‘He was a decent, hard-working family man and a loving father.’
