A Waikato man who assaulted and raped a woman in her own home threatened to harm the victim's family if she reported the attack.
Tekauhanganui Mahara was sentenced yesterday in the Hamilton District Court to 6 1/2-years' jail after pleading guilty to sexual violation by rape and injuring with intent to injure.
Mahara, 23, was served with a first warning under the new "three strikes" law after pleading guilty to the two charges.
The court was told how Mahara attacked his victim inside her home on June 9, in full view of the woman's terrified child.
Mahara slapped the woman about the face before pushing her against a wall and punching her.
The woman suffered two black eyes and a broken nose.
Judge Glen Marshall described the attack as particularly serious and violent. Mahara had taken offending of this type "right to the very extreme".

"He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches."
"Being is substance and life; life manifests by movement; movement is perpetuated by equilibrium; equilibrium is therefore the law of immortality.
"The doctrine of equality!... But there exists no more poisonous poison: for it seems to be preached by justice itself, while it is the end of justice.... "Equality for equals, inequality for unequals" that would be the true voice of justice: and, what follows from it, "Never make equal what is unequal."
