A 76-year-old Melbourne man has been jailed for 18 years for killing his wife with a hatchet.
Peter and Rosa Caruso were about to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary when he attacked her with a hatchet at their Templestowe home in July 2008.
He then tried to cover up the crime by claiming his wife was attacked by an intruder.
The court heard Mrs Caruso died of "extensive depressed cranial fractures".
In sentencing, Justice Betty King told Caruso that his crime remained "entirely motiveless" and was out of character for him and the relationship he had had with his wife.
She sentenced him to 18 years in jail to serve a minimum of 15 years.

"He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches."
"Being is substance and life; life manifests by movement; movement is perpetuated by equilibrium; equilibrium is therefore the law of immortality.
"The doctrine of equality!... But there exists no more poisonous poison: for it seems to be preached by justice itself, while it is the end of justice.... "Equality for equals, inequality for unequals" that would be the true voice of justice: and, what follows from it, "Never make equal what is unequal."
