Lita Broadhurst, 48, threw herself off a fourth floor balcony on Friday morning after leaving an apparent suicide note for her teenage children on her Facebook homepage.

The expat English teacher, who lived in Garrucha near Almeria on Spain's southern coast, blamed a British associate as the source of her misery.

She jumped to her death hours before she was due to give evidence against a former associate who was appearing in a local court accused of assaulting her.

In her final message, entitled "Last Words", she gave details of the abuse she claimed to have endured at his hands and said: "I write this in the hope that (HE) will be seen for what he is and prevented from hurting any other person who falls into his hands."

She went on: "I am not easily beaten, but this time I can see no way out of the black hole: too often have I had to beg for help from those who love me. I am alone this time and no longer able to find the way out. I have no more than despair and fatigue within me now."

And she left a poignant message for her teenage son and daughter and asked for their forgiveness.

"My fabulous children are my only anchor and I deeply, profoundly regret the pain I will cause them. Please, I beg you, don't hate me for letting you down now. My love for you both will never disappear because I have no doubts that when you need it, you'll feel it still. "

The trial of her associate was postponed and he was released on bail pending further investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
