U.S. mother embroiled in custody battle with father

Police are waiting to question the mother of three young children who have been found dead in 'suspicious' circumstances following an explosion at a block of flats.
Eight-year-old twins Gianluca and Austin Riggi and their sister Cecilia, five, were found dead by firefighters tackling a blaze at the Edinburgh home.
Sources said the three children had stab wounds.
Their mother, 46-year-old Theresa Riggi, was discovered outside the building after jumping or falling from a second-floor balcony of the building in the Slateford area of the city.
She is in a serious condition at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where she is sedated. Police are waiting to quiz her over the deaths.
US-born Mrs Riggi and her husband Pasquale, 46, have been embroiled in a custody battle since he launched divorce proceedings.
The pair had been due to attend court in Edinburgh on Tuesday but she did not turn up. Though she called Mr Riggi ahead of the case, she did not say where she was.
Mr Riggi's lawyer David Jack asked for an order to safeguard the children's interests and told judge Lady Clark: 'I think there is a real emergency in this matter'.
A search was launched and social workers were advised to apply to a local sheriff for child protection orders if they thought it necessary, once the youngsters were found.
But the next day, they were discovered dead.
Only last month, Mrs Riggi and the children were reported missing from their home in Westhill, Aberdeenshire.
There were fears at the time she had been planning on taking them abroad and ports and airports were alerted to be on the look-out.
But the family group were found two weeks ago at a friend's flat in Edinburgh. Mrs Riggi had asked that no information about their whereabouts be released.
On Tuesday, the Court of Session heard the mother objected to her estranged husband seeing the children and had equipped them with mobile phones and personal alarms when they visited him.
Reports prepared as part of the divorce action advised contact between father and children and said there would be no problems with the youngsters living with him.
The court heard the couple disagreed on their education with Mr Riggi wanting them to go to school while Mrs Riggi wanted to teach them at home. They were being home schooled before their deaths.
Police said they were speaking to Mr Riggi who has worked for oil firm Shell since 1987 and was in Aberdeen at the time of the incident. He was not being interviewed as a suspect.
Today floral tributes to his children were left close to the scene.
One card attached to a bunch of flowers and a yellow teddy bear simply said: 'With sympathy'.
Another, from an anonymous Edinburgh taxi driver, said: 'Gone far too soon (Luca, Austin + Cecilia) your (sic) in God's loving arms now.'
A third note, attached to a small grey teddy bear, said: 'To the little ones lost so tragically. There are now three more stars in the sky. I hope the angels are taking care of you.'
A police cordon guarded by two officers remained at the entrance to the townhouses.
Despite initial reports that the blast had been caused by gas, it later emerged there was no fault with the supply.
The tragedy happened shortly before 3pm at the flat in Slateford Road in the Craiglockhart district of the capital.
Neighbours reported an explosion and a woman falling or jumping from a window in the block.
Firefighters then discovered the bodies of the children after extinguishing a 'small blaze' in the first-floor flat.
Scotland Gas Networks sent engineers to the scene but said the explosion did not involve its system.
Shortly after 5pm yesterday, a police forensic team moved in. Detectives also began trying to source CCTV footage from commercial premises in the area.
The tragedy stunned people living in and near the flats, many of which are occupied by overseas students attending Queen Margaret University.
One 21-year-old neighbour watched as the woman plunged from the balcony.
The man, who did not want to give his name, said: 'I heard screaming. It was really bad, big screaming - the sort of screaming you would only do if a death or something very, very bad had happened.
'She was standing on the third-floor balcony. She was holding her arms, like she was already injured. She was crying and screaming.'
He added: 'There were about five of us standing, saying to her, "don't do it, don't jump".
'Then she jumped off. My neighbour tried to catch her and she kind of landed on his arms. I think he's a bit bruised but okay.
'She was lying on the floor and I left the scene, it was just too much. I don't think she was jumping to save herself. If she was she would have jumped from the first-floor balcony.'
The man added that he had never seen the woman before.
Meanwhile, student Moe Harbi, 22, said: 'My brother Rabbah was inside our flat when he heard an explosion. It was so powerful it made his chair move.
'He went out on the balcony and he saw the woman on the balcony above. She was shouting. When he next looked, she was gone.'
Zane Harvey, 28, who lives in the same block as the explosion, saw the woman on the ground. The shop worker said: 'I was walking home and I saw this woman lying.
'She was white with blonde hair and wearing beige clothes, but I'm not sure what age she was. She was getting help from four people.'
He added: 'Once I was inside my flat I looked back out and realised that there was a window open at the balcony and smoke coming out.'
Student Fattah Hamami, 19, said: 'There was a big bang and it shook me awake. Suddenly the police were there and the keeper opened the door for the police. I could smell gas before it happened.'
Others confirmed that they, too, had smelled gas earlier in the day.
Mr Harbi, a chemical engineering student from Saudi Arabia, said: 'I smelled gas about 1pm and I thought it was from my flat.
'I checked the kitchen and the oven and then I slept. I didn't think it was from my neighbours.'
Mr Harbi left his flat and arrived home shortly after the explosion.
Detective Superintendent Allan Jones today said it was too early to determine the children's cause of death.
He said the youngsters had been living a 'cosseted life' in the city for a few weeks while their mother and father - one from California and the other from Colorado - had been in the country for 13 years.
'First and foremost our thoughts are with the children's family, and we are doing what we can to support them at this tragic time,' he added.
He said Mr Riggi was 'heartbroken' but 'very composed'.
In a statement, Shell said: 'This is obviously a human tragedy of proportions that most of us find hard to comprehend and our thoughts are with Pasquale and his family.
'Shell will continue to provide Pasquale with support.
'We would urge that he is left alone to deal with his great personal loss.'
A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out on the children today.
City councillor Gordon Buchan, who represents the Fountainbridge and Craiglockhart ward, said City of Edinburgh Council would visit the building when it had been made safe and provide assistance to anyone who had been affected by the blast.

Young farmer shot himself dead minutes after girlfriend's father banned them from seeing each other
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 11:11 AM on 4th August 2010
A young farmer shot himself dead on New Year's Day just minutes after getting a text message from his girlfriend saying her father wanted them to split up.
The night before his death James Lyon, 21, drunkenly crashed his car while driving home from a Young Farmers' New Year's Eve party with girlfriend Annie Godfrey.
An inquest into his death heard Mr Lyon was two times over the drink drive limit when he crashed his Range Rover into a tree.
The following day he got a text message from Miss Godfrey saying 'Dad's saying if I ever see you again I should leave home. I'm so gutted this has happened and I can't talk to you because everyone's here and they're angry.'
Chelmsford Coroner's Court in Essex heard yesterday that five minutes after getting the text message Mr Lyon's mother Nicolina heard a loud bang from his room, and discovered he had shot himself.
The inquest heard he had written a note in pencil on an RAC document that said:
'Mummy and Daddy, sorry for what it's going to do.'
The court heard that Mr Lyon, from North Benfleet in Essex, drove home from the party in Galleywood despite having booked a hotel room.
Detective Inspector Simon Anslow told the court that police officers spotted his Range Rover speeding about midnight.
'Officers saw him drive around a series of bends and found his car crashed into a tree.'
Mr Lyon was breath tested and spent the night at Rayleigh Police Station and Miss Godfrey was taken to hospital with whiplash and a suspected broken hand.
Later that day Mr Lyon was sent abusive text messages from Miss Godfrey's ex-boyfriend, wrongly claiming she was unable to walk after the crash.
At 1pm he received two text messages from Miss Godfrey, one saying her father did not want her to see him again. Minutes later he killed himself.
Detective Inspector Anslow told the inquest that the gun was licensed to be used by Mr Lyon and his parents, Nicolina and Robert, and had been stored correctly in a secure cabinet.
A post mortem examination found no traces of drugs or alcohol in Mr Lyon's body.
Deputy coroner Eleanor McGann recorded a verdict of suicide.
She said: 'It's my view James was in turmoil. He was already ashamed and deeply regretted what he had done.
'He was very sorry he had injured his girlfriend and didn't know those injuries weren't as serious as they might have been.
'All these circumstances lead me to be sure James Lyon took his own life.'
She told Mr Lyon's family: 'I hope you remember the happy times with him and what a delightful young man he was. This is very sad.'

Child rapist 'stamped to death in his prison cell by fellow inmate'
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 6:33 AM on 4th August 2010
A child rapist has allegedly been stamped to death in his prison cell by a fellow inmate.
Robert Coello, 44, who was serving a sentence for sexually assaulting a minor, was found with head injuries in his cell in G wing of HMP Grendon in Buckinghamshire on Sunday.
He was taken to Stoke Mandeville Hospital but pronounced dead later that day, Thames Valley Police said.
The force said a 25-year-old inmate was arrested on Sunday evening before being bailed and returned to prison.
Officers are waiting for results of a post-mortem examination by a Home Office pathologist.
Coello was jailed at Reading Crown Court in August 2006, after admitting four counts of rape and 12 other sexual assaults.
He was serving a minimum seven year sentence.
HMP Grendon opened in 1962 as an experimental psychiatric prison, providing treatment for prisoners with antisocial personality disorders, under the direction of a medical superintendent, according the HM Prison Service website.
It is now run by a Prison Service governor and continues to operate a regime of therapeutic care for offenders.
The prison can house up to 235 inmates in Category B secure conditions, with the six wings operating as autonomous therapeutic communities.
Prisoners must be committed to staying drug free while in therapy.
It is believed to be the first time an inmate has been killed in a category B prison.
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: 'There has been no change to the type of prisoner held there in recent months, and no change to the vetting process.'

Slasher Kills 3 Kids, 1 Teacher at China School
Latest Attacker Used Knife on about 20 Children, Staff; 2 Children Seriously Injured
(AP) Updated at 12:12 a.m. ET
A knife-wielding man went on a slashing rampage in a kindergarten in eastern China, leaving three children and one teacher dead, area residents reported Wednesday.
The unidentified assailant entered the school in a suburb of Zibo in Shandong province at about 4 p.m. Tuesday as parents were picking up their children, according to people living nearby contacted by telephone.
About 20 children and staff were injured, two of the children seriously, they said.
China this year has suffered a spate of gory rampage attacks on schools and in public spaces, leaving dozens of people dead and scores wounded.
A woman who works in a restaurant opposite the Boshan District Experimental Kindergarten's Jinfengyuan branch said the attacker was a man aged 27 or 28 who had gained entry to the school by posing as a parent.
Police rushed to the kindergarten soon after the attack and officers transported some injured children to hospital before ambulances had time to arrive, said the woman, who would give only her surname, Zhang.
"The kindergarten has been sealed off until now. There're still police officers there," Zhang said.
Zhang and other area residents said the teacher died of her injuries Wednesday morning.
The Zibo killings came just two days after a man in Hebei province to the west went on a rampage at the wheel of his earthmover, smashing vehicles and buildings and leaving 17 dead.
Other recent mass killings include a May 12 attack on a kindergarten in the northern province of Shaanxi that left seven children and two adults dead and the wounding of 29 children at a kindergarten in Jiangsu province in April.
The seemingly unrelated attacks have prompted calls for more attention to diagnosing serious mental illnesses and ignited fears over the toll stress is taking on the nation's emotional health.
Authorities have responded with increased security at schools and orders to limit media coverage of the attacks to discourage copycats.
Local officials in Zibo hung up the phone when reporters called for information on the attack.

Man arrested after attacking pop machine with a hatchet
Idaho Statesman reports - Idaho Statesman
Published: 08/02/10
Chris P. Collins is being held in the Ada County Jail on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor malicious injury to property after Collins told Boise police he attacked a pop machine with a hatchet because he thought somebody was trapped inside.
Boise police were sent to a motel on Broadway Avenue at 8:46 p.m. Sunday to investigate a report of a man carrying a hatchet in the area. When police arrived, they found the Pepsi machine damaged and saw Collins holding the hatchet. That's when Collins told police he attacked the machine because he suspected someone was inside, according to reports.
Police say the 47-year-old Collins sat down when asked and peacefully handed over the hatchet to officers.
Police say Collins also gave them the key to his motel room, where officers found two used syringes and a spoon with white residue that tested positive for methamphetamine, according to reports.
Police then arrested Collins and booked him into the Ada County Jail.

Home-alone girl, 12, foils burglar with a kick to the groin... then draws a picture of him for police
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 12:33 PM on 3rd August 2010
A hapless burglar came off second-best after he was caught red-handed by a home-alone 12-year-old girl - who promptly kicked him in the groin.
Brave Georgia Bulis-Gray went to investigate after she heard a door slam in her parents' kitchen and found herself confronting a hooded intruder.
The schoolgirl, who said she didn’t want the smirking man to think she was helpless, kicked him hard, forcing him to flee in agony from the house in Bosham, West Sussex.
Georgia then called the police and even had the presence of mind to do a quick sketch of the man she had just seen.
Georgia, a second year pupil at Chichester High School, West Sussex, said: 'He just smiled at me and I thought, "I do not want him thinking I am just a helpless little girl".
'It made me angry that he was doing something wrong and I did not want him to think that just because I am a little girl it did not matter what he was doing.
'He looked shocked that I did not scream or run away and faced up to him. I kicked him very hard and he groaned and then ran out of the side gate.
'I ran to the front door to see which direction he was running to. I did not want him going to anyone else's house.'
Georgia said of her 'photo-fit' sketch: 'It is not very good but I knew I had to draw something while his face was still fresh in my mind.'
Relieved mother Joanna, 48, admitted she was amazed at the bravery of her daughter in such a highly-pressurised situation.
She said: 'I am very proud of her she was incredibly brave to do what she did. He was a lot bigger than her.
'When she told me what she had done I was absolutely terrified. I dread to think what could have happened.
'I kept asking her if she was OK but she was so calm. I do not think I would have reacted like that; it is amazing how cool she was under pressure.
'She did not even want to tell me what had happened to start with she was calmly making supper and said, "Mum, something a bit odd has happened".
'On reflection, I worry that kicking him might have provoked him but maybe if she had not done it he might have locked her in her room or hurt her.'
The man, described as being white, of pale complexion and aged between 18 and 20 managed to escape the scene and a Sussex Police investigation is ongoing.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: 'Georgia showed tremendous bravery to confront the intruder.'

Girl, 14, forced to be prostitute in Greater Manchester
2 August 2010 Last updated at 19:10 GMT
A 14-year-old was forced into prostitution and sexually abused by a series of men after going missing from her home in Greater Manchester.
Nine men were convicted in connection with the abuse, which took place in February and March 2008.
The girl, described as vulnerable, was "used as a commodity" for sexual activity with the men, police said.
Supt Paul Savill, of Greater Manchester Police (GMP), said she had been through an "absolutely horrifying ordeal".
Police said the girl, who first went missing on 16 February 2008, had been abused by a number of different men "as she went from one vulnerable situation to another".
In each case the men identified her vulnerability to take advantage of her.
In a statement issued following the convictions, the girl said: "These people exploit young girls, introduce them to prostitution, feed them drugs and alcohol and tell them they love them.
'Changed my life'
"I know this because it has happened to me and it has changed my life enormously.
"I just hope that people will be more aware of this now and will be able to prevent this from happening to other vulnerable young girls."
Over a series of separate hearings and trials, Manchester Crown Court heard how the girl was first picked up in Rochdale town centre by Asad Hassan.
He took her to a nightclub where she was plied with drink and taken to a flat along with two other men, Basharat Mohammed and Mohammed Atif, who all later sexually exploited her.
A few days later she travelled to Manchester where she met another man, Aftab Khan, who also plied her with alcohol and drugs before ordering her to work as a prostitute.
Over the next 10 days she was forced to have sex with a number of men for money, before flagging down a couple in the street and begging them for help.
Supt Savill said the level of abuse the girl had suffered was "almost beyond belief".
"She has been treated like a commodity: beaten, threatened and sexually exploited.
"These men took advantage of her vulnerability with no regard for her wellbeing.
"I commend this young girl for her bravery in supporting this case. Even after her ordeal she was able to revisit the sites where she was abused and testify against her abusers in court."
'Nightmare experience'
The girl's parents added: "We are very proud of our daughter for her courage in assisting Greater Manchester Police with the prosecution of these abusers who caused her such terrible harm.
"No family should have to endure a nightmare experience like the one we have been through.
"We support our daughter in hoping that these successful prosecutions will send a message that will help protect other children."
Nine men convicted at Manchester Crown Court in connection with the abuse were:
--Aftab Khan, 31, of Tarporley Avenue, Fallowfield pleaded guilty to one count of controlling a child prostitute and one count of sexual activity with a child. He was sentenced to nine years in prison. This was later reduced to seven years on appeal
--Abid Khaliq, 30, of Shrewsbury Street, Stretford was sentenced to eight months in prison after admitting perverting the course of justice
--Noorzai Ahmed, 29, of Royce Court, Hulme was sentenced to four years in prison after he was found guilty of paying for the sexual services of a child
--Mohammed Anwar Safi, 29, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 31 months in prison after admitting paying for the sexual services of a child
--Mohammed Khan, 26, of Royce Court, Hulme was sentenced to four years in prison after he was found guilty of facilitating child prostitution
--Najibullah Safi, 33, of Reabrook Avenue, West Gorton was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to sexual activity with a child
--Asad Yousaf Hassa, 28, of Rivington Street, Rochdale was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting two counts of sexual activity with a child
--Mohammed Basharat, 28, of Prospect Street, Rochdale was sentenced to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child under 16
--Mohammed Atif, 29, of Rivington Street, Rochdale was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to sexual activity with a child

Mongolia’s Neo-Nazi problem
Ron Nurwisah August 3, 2010 – 10:10 am
They worship Hitler as a great leader, parade around flags with swastikas and practice the Nazi salute. But these neo-Nazis aren’t terrorizing people in Eastern Europe or North America, instead they’re practicing their brand of paranoid hate in Mongolia.

Time Magazine writes about a small fringe movement that’s growing in the north Asian country sparked by fears of foreign influence from neighbouring China and Russia.
From the article:
Ulan Bator is home to three ultra-nationalist groups claiming a combined membership of several thousand — a not insignificant number in a country of just 3 million people. They have adopted Nazi paraphernalia and dogma, and are vehemently anti-Chinese. One group, Blue Mongolia, has admitted to shaving the heads of local women found sleeping with Chinese men. Its leader was convicted last year of murdering his daughter’s Mongolian boyfriend, who had merely studied in China. The Guardian’s Tania Branigan also writes about these groups and points out that seem to have a very selective reading of Nazi history. They see Hitler as a leader to be emulated but gloss over small things like starting the Second World War and genocide.
The neo-Nazis may be on society’s fringe, but they represent the extreme of a very real current of nationalism. Sandwiched between Russia and China, with foreign powers clamoring for a slice of the country’s vast mineral riches, many Mongolians fear economic and ethnic colonization. This has prompted displays of hostility toward outsiders and slowed crucial foreign-investment negotiations.
From the story:
“We don’t agree with his extremism and starting the second world war. We are against all those killings, but we support his ideology. We support nationalism rather than fascism.”She also digs a little deeper at the anxiety over growing Chinese influence on Mongolia.
“While most people feel far-right discourse is too extreme, there seems to be a consensus that China is imperialistic, ‘evil’ and intent on taking Mongolia,” said Franck BillĂ© of Cambridge University, who is researching representations of Chinese people in Mongolia. From: http://news.nationalpost.com/2010/08/03/mongolias-neo-nazi-problem/
8-year-old's violent behaviour stuns small town
Zoe McKnight, National Post · Saturday, Jul. 31, 2010
In the isolated town of Stoneville, N.L., population less than 500, residents are starting to wonder what to do about an eight-year-old boy whose behaviour has long concerned them, but has now grown violent.
First, it was a dog bludgeoned to death with a barbecue utensil in June. And now it's a dozen ducks, hens and chicks kept in a backyard as pets, found beaten with gardening tools on Tuesday.
The boy, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has admitted to both attacks, police say, although he is too young to be charged with a criminal offence. It is believed that the boy used gardening tools he found in the shed of Cory Hodder to kill the birds. Some were so badly abused they had to be euthanized.
"I expected something to happen and I expect more," said resident Marlene Gillingham. "I wish there was something that somebody could do. There should be some kind of a home for kids like this. So they could learn, and get this out of their blood. It's just in him."
Ms. Gillingham has two children herself, aged 5 and 7. She said she worries for their safety as they go to school with the boy.
Almost everyone in tightknit Stoneville has lived there all their life. Most people are related. The town itself is just a post office, a hall, a gas bar and Ginn's general store. You can walk from end to end in less than an hour. There are very few jobs and most people travel to work. St. John's lies more than 400 kilometres or a five-hour drive to the southeast.
"I'll soon be 70 years old, and I don't remember anything like this happening in Stoneville before," resident Rosie Bennett said. She said she was surprised the first time the boy admitted killing an animal, but now she is simply worried.
"The only fear you might have is, would he do the same thing with another child? Would the next thing be something bigger than an animal? Probably a kid smaller than himself."
"He's a bad boy. I don't know what's wrong with him," said Irene Hodder, who knows the family well. "He's only eight years old. My goodness!"
"They're going to have to take him out to some school or put him away for a while," Evelyn Hodder said. "If they don't do something about it, he could end up hurting a youngster, a little one."
Marlene Brown has two children, 4 and 6, and lives near the boy's family home. "He's only eight years old, but I got two small kids and I don't allow him on my property or anywhere near here. If I see him coming, I tell him to leave because he's not quite trustworthy around here anymore," Ms. Brown said.
The boy wanders over to her house and seems to have no adult supervision, she said. He's even been out in the neighbourhood since the incident on Tuesday night.
Last summer, when her son was 3, Ms. Brown found the boy had pinned him to the pavement outside. She has caught him destroying birds' nests in her yard.
"My kids think it's wonderful [that] there's little babies out in the nest. He could come and smash them on the ground and that's it. That's just the way he is." She said it's happened "tons of times."
RCMP Sergeant Wayne Newell confirmed police had initially handled the matter but have passed it along to the provincial department of Child, Youth and Family Services.
Many people in Stoneville expressed a wish that there was some place the boy could go to get help. "He's certainly not getting it with his parents," Ms. Gillingham said.
One woman, who is an aunt to both the boy's unmarried parents, who are cousins, said his parents don't get along. "Sometimes I think it's the way they're reared up," she said.
The father will shoot "a bird, a duck, a seagull, anything that moves," Ms. Gillingham said. When interviewed last month after the boy killed Cuddles, a black Pomeranian belonging to Emma and Norman Hodder, the father largely shrugged the incident off: "Yeah, it's not a very good thing for him to do but the dog is dead, you can't bring him back.''
Cory Hodder said his birds were pets for his kids; he immediately suspected the boy. "There's nobody here in Stoneville who could do like only he," Mr. Hodder said.
Mr. Hodder said that he has not been offered compensation, but intends to ask for $25 per bird. He is willing to take the matter to court because an apology will never come.
"Humans got a sense. Animals ain't. That kid there, he should have had better sense. He should have been taught right from wrong," Mr. Hodder said.

Roseville boy dies when slingshot launches 5-pound rock into chest
By John Brewer
Updated: 08/02/2010 11:56:22 PM CDT
Carter W. Geyen and his friend, both 12, took their homemade slingshot to Bruce Russell Park in Roseville on Sunday to launch a baseball, rocks and even chunks of concrete.
Their device — a length of surgical tubing stretched between the tops of two posts — could fire items high enough into the air that they left craters in the ground when they landed.
But when the boys tried to launch a 5-pound rock, the fun turned lethal.
The rock shot a short distance into the air, then fell directly on Geyen's chest. He was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.
Geyen grew up a block and a half away from the playground and visited the park almost every day, said Kelly McDyre, who spoke Monday on behalf of the family.
McDyre said a doctor determined the boy died of blunt-force trauma to the heart.
"It was instant," McDyre said. "The pain from the loss of Carter is overwhelming. (His family's) lives and dreams have been shattered, and their hearts are broken."
In his obituary, the family said their son died doing what he loved most — playing.
"There was nothing suspicious; it was just a tragic accident," said Roseville Police Chief Rick Mathwig.
Police said it appeared the boys secured the tubing and its nylon sling between 9-foot-tall posts on the playground.
They fired the slingshot by one boy stretching the tubing to the other boy lying on the ground between the posts. A nylon sling — described by police as a modified fanny pack — held the projectiles. The boy on the ground then let go, shooting the projectiles into the air.
When police arrived about 3:30 p.m. at the park on Roselawn Avenue near Lexington Avenue, they found a dozen craters in the ground.
An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, Mathwig said.
Hamad Jaman, 18 of Roseville said he arrived at the park to play tennis apparently moments after the accident. He said he saw a boy run out of the park and another boy who appeared to be sleeping near the playground equipment.
Jaman said he and a friend played tennis for a few minutes but became concerned when they realized the boy on the ground had not moved.
"We made our way over to the kid and tried to get a response from him. There was no movement, no nothing," Jaman said.
The two moved the boy's arm from over his face and saw his lips were blue.
"We checked his pulse," Haman said. "There was nothing."
Jaman and his friend called 911. A man nearby rushed over, Jaman said, and tried CPR.
Jaman said he saw a rock lying next to Geyen that was "bigger than his chest."
He said rescue workers arrived and tried to revive the boy for more than 45 minutes.
Geyen's playmate returned to the park with his parents, Jaman said, and talked with police.
"I wish we were there earlier to have them stop playing the game," Jaman said.
Geyen is survived by his parents and an older brother.
A funeral was scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Roseville Lutheran Church, 1215 W. Roselawn Ave., adjacent to the park.

Teen to stand trial over schoolboy murder
Posted 08/03/2010
A Brisbane teenager accused of murdering another boy has been committed to stand trial.
The 14-year-old, who cannot be named, is accused of stabbing 12-year-old Elliott Fletcher at a private school on Brisbane's bayside in February this year.
The boy was critically injured and treated by paramedics at the scene, but died soon after arriving at the Royal Children's Hospital.
His alleged attacker was charged with one count of murder and failed to secure bail shortly after his arrest.
Brisbane Children's Court Magistrate Pam Dowse today ruled there was enough evidence to potentially convict the teenager over the death.
The teenager's three-day committal hearing, which started last week and concluded today, was held in closed court.
The 14-year-old did not make another bail application after being committed and was remanded in custody to appear in the Supreme Court on a date to be fixed.

Herpes virus used to treat cancer
1 August 2010 Last updated at 23:12 GMT
By Emma Wilkinson
Health reporter, BBC News
Doctors say they have used a genetically engineered herpes virus to treat successfully patients with head and neck cancer.
A London hospital trial of 17 patients found that use of the virus alongside chemotherapy and radiotherapy helped kill the tumours in most patients.
It works by getting into cancer cells, killing them from the inside, and also boosting the patient's immune system.
Further trials are planned for later in the year.
Head and neck cancer, which includes cancer of the mouth, tongue and throat, affects up to 8,000 people every year in the UK.
Study leader Dr Kevin Harrington, who is based at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, said current treatments were effective if the cancer was picked up early but that many patients were not diagnosed until it was more advanced.
The herpes virus, which is also being tested in patients with skin cancer, is genetically manipulated so that it grows inside tumour cells but cannot infect normal healthy cells.
Once there it has a triple effect - it multiplies, killing tumour cells as it does so, it is engineered to produce a human protein that activates the immune system and it also makes a viral protein that acts as a red flag to immune cells.
'Potential weapon'
In the 17 patients injected with the virus, in addition to their standard treatment, at the Royal Marsden Hospital, 93% showed no trace of cancer after their tumour had been surgically removed.
More than two years later, 82% of patients had not succumbed to the disease.
Only two of 13 patients given the virus treatment at a high dose relapsed, the journal Clinical Cancer Research reported.
There were no safety concerns with use of the virus, the researchers said, and it is hoped the virus could one day be used to fight other types of cancer.
"Around 35 to 55% of patients given the standard chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment typically relapse within two years, so these results compare very favourably," said Dr Harrington.
He is now planning a trial comparing the viral treatment with the standard treatment in people newly diagnosed with head and neck cancer.
Dr Alison Ross, senior science information officer at Cancer Research UK, said it would be some time before the treatment could be used in patients as it still needed to be tested directly against standard treatment.
But she added: "This small study highlights the potential of using genetically modified viruses as a weapon to fight cancer."

Police say several killed in shootings at Conn. beer distributor, worker had been told to quit
Published August 03, 2010 | Associated Press
MANCHESTER, Conn. Authorities say several people were killed when a warehouse worker who had been told to resign opened fire at a beer distributor in Connecticut.
State police Lt. J. Paul Vance says the number of deaths hasn't been confirmed in the shootings Tuesday morning in Manchester, about 10 miles east of Hartford.
Brett Hollander of Hartford Distributors has said at least three people were shot. He says 50 to 70 people were inside during a shift change and that the company is "just trying to figure out who's shot, who's not accounted for."
Vance says authorities were searching the building to make sure everyone was accounted for.
Hollander says he did not know the shooter well and didn't know how long he had worked at the company.
AP's earlier story is below.
MANCHESTER, Conn. (AP) — A warehouse worker who had been called in to resign his job at a beer distributor opened fire there Tuesday morning, a company executive said, and at least three people were wounded, one critically.
Manchester police Lt. Joe San Antonio would not confirm whether anyone was killed or what happened to the gunman. A fire at the warehouse, about 10 miles east of Hartford, was put out.
Three people with gunshot wounds were taken to Hartford Hospital, said spokeswoman Michaela Donnelly. One was in critical condition, one was in fair condition and one person's condition was unknown, she said.
About 50 to 70 people were in the warehouse because it was a shift change, said Brett Hollander, the director of marketing at Hartford Distributors.
"We're now just trying to figure out who's shot, who's not accounted for," he said.
Hollander's cousin, a vice president at the company, was shot in the arm and the face, Hollander said, but he thought he would be OK. It was not clear if he was among the victims taken to Hartford Hospital.
Hollander, whose family owns the distributor, said he did not know the shooter well and didn't know how long he had worked there.
Police officers from numerous agencies and police and fire vehicles surrounded the warehouse, on a tree-lined road in an industrial park just west of a shopping mall. A SWAT team with a police dog was walking around the property a couple of hours after the 7 a.m. shooting.

A woman baby-sitting her two young nieces went berserk and stabbed them repeatedly in a bloody rampage in her sister and brother-in-law's showcase Westchester home across the street from Martha Stewart's farm, authorities said yesterday.
Lisa Turkki, 39, grabbed a knife from the kitchen of the Katonah home and stabbed Maeve and Annabel Kelly, ages 7 and 9, at around 9 p.m. Saturday, seriously wounding both youngsters, said police in Bedford, the town that encompasses Katonah.
A 911 call was placed at 9:22 p.m., apparently by Turkki, pleading for help.
The girls' parent -- financier Joe Kelly, 50, and Eva, 43, -- were in nearby Caramoor attending a concert.
They were called to the box office at intermission and told to return home.
Neighbors heard screams from the parents as they entered the blood-spattered kitchen where the mayhem unfolded.
"This is a parent's worst nightmare," said Heather Flournoy, who once wrote on her blog, Katonah Green, about the family and their innovative "green" home.
"Heartbreaking and close to home."
Turkki was arrested in the front yard on assault charges. Her nieces were in stable condition at Westchester Medical Center and were expected to survive.
"They are lovely, the loveliest couple I know," said Tapani Talo, 59, the contractor who helped turn the Kelly home into a cutting-edge example of green living, featuring geothermal heating.
The home is across Girdle Ridge Road from Stewart's farm and near Ralph Lauren's estate.
"The girls are so great. I can't believe this would happen to them. I would assume anyone who could do this would have mental problems," Talo said.
Neighbors knew little of the aunt, who lives with her parents upstate. Calls to the home were not answered.
"She didn't seem quite right -- a little odd," one neighbor told The Post.
Records show Turkki, who lives in East Syracuse, was a volunteer at ARISE, a nonprofit that works with people with physical and mental disabilities, in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Phone calls to the program were not answered.
Talo said Joseph Kelly travels around the world for his work in financial services. His wife, who used to be in finance, now stays home with her girls, he said.
Flournoy, 41, used to give Eva Kelly horseback-riding lessons.
"That family is just so sweet," she told The Post. "They're raising chickens and bunnies and gardening. I've had the girls around my pony, and they are just sweet, regular girls, a little shy with new people." Neighbors rallied around the family.
"There is little to be said that isn't already in everyone's thoughts," one neighbor wrote on Facebook. "It's what we try to protect against, and wonder why it still happens. It's very hard to believe that anyone is capable of this."

Battersea sees 'shocking' rise in stray aggressive dogs
2 August 2010 Last updated at 10:51 GMT

BBC Panorama
Hundreds of aggressive dogs are being put down despite being healthy because they are unsuitable to rehome, the UK's oldest animal shelter has said.
Battersea Dogs and Cats Home had to put down about one third of the dogs it took in last year - a total of 2,815 animals, of which 1,931 were healthy.
The charity says a growing number are put down because their behaviour means they pose a safety risk.
The shelter says the issue of stray, aggressive dogs needs to be addressed.
'Enough is enough'
Scott Craddock, director of operations, told the BBC's Panorama that the figures were "shocking".
He said he believed animal rescue centres were being left to "mop up" a problem created by wider society.
"We need to highlight exactly what is going on and we feel we've come to a point where enough is enough," he said.
The home does not turn away stray or unwanted dogs and rehomes or returns about 5,000 a year.
It is the first time since the mid-1990s that the home has released details of the number of healthy dogs being destroyed.
"What people are doing to some of these dogs and the state they are coming in to us is completely unacceptable," he said.
He added that all dogs coming into the home were thoroughly assessed to check if they could be safely rehomed.
For those deemed suitable there is no time limit on a dog's stay, as some can take many months to attract new owners.
Staffordshire bull terriers - "Staffies" - and dogs crossbred with them, are among the most common found in kennels at Battersea.
The home has centres in central London, Old Windsor in Berkshire, and Brands Hatch in Kent.
'Status' dogs
Officials say the number of Staffies coming into Battersea has leapt 850% since 1996 and they often lack basic training that allows them to get along with other dogs or sometimes even people.
Dog wardens in many parts of the country have also reported rising numbers of stray Staffies in recent years. Animal shelters, which do not discriminate on intake, are full of them.
Yet pet shops and breeders are still able to sell young Staffies for hundreds of pounds. While pups are in demand, adults are in surplus.
The tragedy for the Staffie is that it looks similar to the pit bull, now banned under the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act.
Hard-looking dogs have become a status symbol, and Staffies - once regarded simply as a loyal family pet - have become a victim of that fashion.
Sgt Ian McParland of the Metropolitan Police has witnessed the trend.
"Staffies are lovely family dogs. But they're crossing them... and kids are breeding all sorts now. They're obviously trying to create a pit bull a lot of the time but a lot of the offshoots of that get abandoned."
However, animal welfare organisations believe the problem with unwanted dogs goes beyond one breed.
Dog licences
The RSPCA, the UK's largest animal charity, said it had been forced to close its doors to the increasing number of discarded animals in order to concentrate on rescuing those genuinely at risk of cruelty.
"Last year, 2009, we killed 533 healthy dogs," said the RSPCA's Tim Wass.
"And you'll notice I used the word 'kill' there, rather than 'put to sleep' or 'humanely euthanise'.
"There's been enough euphemism, we really need to tell it how it is."
Mr Wass said he believed some dog owners took more responsibility for their furniture than their dogs, and blamed "uncontrollable breeding, the lack of responsibility, and the lack of duty of care" for the problem.
"The buck has to stop somewhere, and too often… it is the needle in the hands of an RSPCA officer and that has got to be wrong."
According to a recent survey by the University of Bristol, the dog population in Britain has risen to 10 million.
Battersea, the Metropolitan Police and the RSPCA are all lobbying government to introduce a registration or licence scheme paid for by the owner which would reliably link a dog to the person responsible for it.
But the government fears a licence might just end up taxing the careful dog owner and leave the irresponsible untouched.
In an interview, Department of Food, Rural Affairs and Agriculture Under-Secretary Lord Henley, who is responsible for dangerous dogs, said he was "not convinced" a dog licence was the way forward.
"We've had licences in the past and we all know what's happened to that - a great deal of non-compliance."

Unhappy Atlanta Wendy's robber phones to complain not enough money in his haul
By staff writers From: NewsCore August 02, 2010 9:49AM
A DISGRUNTLED burglar who held up a Wendy's in Atlanta later called the fast-food restaurant twice to complain there wasn't enough money.
“Next time there better be more than $586 ($647),” the unhappy bandit said in one call, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Police said he made a “similar threat” the second time he phoned.
The paper reported the thief, wearing a ski mask and armed with a gun, walked up to the Wendy’s drive-through window late yesterday and ordered an employee to put the cash drawer on the counter.
He grabbed the drawer and ran, later discarding it in some nearby bushes.

Woman 'rammed her 3-inch stiletto heel through boyfriend's eye and into his brain during drunken taxi row'
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 3:47 PM on 2nd August 2010
A drunk woman rammed her stiletto heel through her boyfriend's eye and into his brain during an argument in a taxi, a jury was told today.
Staci Hargreaves, 33, was in the back of a cab when she kicked Gavin Taylor, 28, after he turned round in the front seat.
David McGonigal, prosecuting, said Hargreaves was wearing 3in-high stiletto heels, one of which caused her boyfriend serious injuries.
He told Bradford Crown Court: 'The heel of one shoe went through the left eye of Mr Gavin Taylor and fractured the socket and entered his brain and caused a blood vessel to burst.'
Mr Taylor began coughing up blood and slumped into unconsciousness following the attack in Huddersfield, the court heard.
He was taken to hospital where his condition initially deteriorated before he eventually made a 'surprising' recovery, the jury heard.
The victim was initially taken to hospital in Huddersfield and then later transferred to a specialist unit in Leeds.
He underwent two operations and was in hospital for a month.
The prosecutor said Hargreaves told police she could not recall the incident but told officers she may have kicked out and unintentionally caused the injuries.
Mr McGonigal told the jury of seven men and five women: 'She would have known there was a serious risk of causing some injury and some grievous injury to Mr Taylor.'
He said the incident happened after the couple had been out drinking in Huddersfield with another couple in the early hours of February 7.
Mr McGonigal said all of them had had a substantial amount to drink.
The other woman in the group was arrested for a public order offence after an argument with another taxi driver, the jury heard.
Her boyfriend eventually got in the cab with Hargreaves and Mr Taylor.
The prosecutor told the jury Mr Taylor had chosen not to take part of the court case.
Taxi driver Mohammed Akbar told the jury that he noticed his front seat passenger turn round after he had been arguing with Hargreaves.
He said he saw a foot coming between the two seats and the man in the front then shouting 'My eye, my eye'.
Mr Akbar said he drove his taxi to the nearest police station and sounded his horn until officers came out to help.
Hargreaves sat in the dock today with a security officer.
She was wearing a dark top with grey trousers and her black hair was tied back.
Hargreaves, of Stalybridge, Manchester, denies causing grievous bodily harm with intent and an alternative charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm.
The trial continues.

Teenager filmed himself torturing three schoolgirls in 'Blair Witch' sex attack
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 2:22 PM on 2nd August 2010
A teenager who filmed himself sexually assaulting and torturing three schoolgirls in scenes compared to cult film The Blair Witch Project has been jailed indefinitely.
Jay Jay Alexander, 19, imprisoned his victims inside derelict changing rooms where he raped a girl of 13 and sexually abused her 14-year-old friend.
He also kept a second 14-year-old captive, while he carried out the abuse.
Twisted Alexander used his mobile phone to record the girls' screams and illuminate the pitch black scene during their ordeal, prompting Judge Jacqueline Beech to liken the footage to the shaky camera work of the 1999 film.
The documentary-style film following three students' attempts to find the local legend known as the Blair Witch in woodland in Maryland, America, became infamous for its home-movie recording style in which characters faces are only lit by the camera's flash.
Alexander struck inside the disused changing rooms at Ive Farm running track in Leyton, east London, on January 25.
The girls had been invited to the sports ground at around 7pm by Alexander and two other boys, aged 16.
He first tried to ply the 13-year-old, who was still wearing her school uniform, with cannabis and vodka.
When she refused Alexander gathered together the two 14-year-olds, who had paired off with teenage boys in other rooms.
He stopped the girls from leaving, warning: 'No one is going anywhere until the truth is told.'
The only light in the darkened room was that coming from Alexander's mobile phone and from the handsets of the other teenagers, Snaresbrook Crown Court was told.
He then ordered the two older girls to have a 'proper bitch fight', before slashing one of them with a broken vodka bottle when she failed to comply.
He then boasted to the others: 'That was nothing compared to what I could do with her'.
Alexander repeatedly punched the girl in the arms and legs, before landing a knock-out blow to her face which rendered her unconscious.
He then dragged her to one of the neighbouring rooms and sexually assaulted her.
Alexander returned to the main room and turned on the 13-year-old, putting his hand up her skirt, molesting her and finally forcing her to perform a sex act on him.
He warned the two other girls they would not be released until she had complied with his demands.
The whole incident, which lasted more than three hours, was also witnessed by the two teenage boys.
The footage, recovered from Alexander's phone, was played in court during the trial.
He denied all charges against him, but was convicted after trial last month.
One of the 16-year-old boys was so sickened by Alexander's behaviour that he dialled 999.
Judge Jacqueline Beech ordered Alexander serve an indeterminate sentence of imprisonment for public protection, with a minimum term of seven years.
He must also sign the sex offenders' register for life. 'You were terrorising the girls who were distressed and crying,' said the judge.
'The recording shows the girls being kept in the darkness.
'As the night progressed, the batteries in the phones that the girls had went flat.
'Nevertheless, the scene recorded on your phone was shocking and reminiscent of scenes, some might think, of the recent horror film The Blair Witch Project.'
The court heard the 13-year-old girl had been left severely traumatised by the ordeal.
'She suffers nightmares and flashbacks, she blames herself for allowing herself to be in the position she was,' said Judge Beech.
'Her relationship with her family has been badly effected. She could not kiss her mother for a significant time because she felt dirty. She no longer trusts any male.'
Alexander, from Leyton, was convicted of oral rape, assault by penetration, causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and sexual assault of the 13-year-old.
He was further convicted of sexual assault and actual bodily harm in relation to one of the 14-year-olds.
He was convicted of false imprisonment in respect of all three girls.

Tractor drunk-driver kills 11 in hour-long rampage
2/08/2010
A drunk killed 11 people when he went on an hour-long rampage driving a tractor in China, smashing into shops and vehicles.
Li Xianliang first killed a customer at the Hongyuan coal depot in Hebei province's Yuanshi county where he worked driving the shovel loader.
Li, 38, who had been drinking, then drove down the road, hitting cars, buses, motorcycles, trucks and roadside shops.
He eventually stopped in a field where police subdued him and will face the death penalty if convicted of murder.
Eight people were killed outright and 20 injured, the three others died in hospital.
China has seen a string of apparently unrelated rampage attacks this year, often by knife-wielding maniacs targeting nurseries and elementary schools.
Fears over copycat attacks led the government to limit coverage about the assaults, which have left more than two dozen people dead and scores wounded.
The attacks, which have also included a courthouse shooting and random slashing attacks at markets and on a train, have prompted an increase in public security and calls for more attention to be paid to mental health problems that often go undiagnosed and untreated.

Twice in 2007, Orange County's Arthur Elmer Whelchel Jr. arrived home intoxicated, raped his 16-year-old daughter and then promised to make amends by being generous.
Once, he bought her new clothes.
And then--following the second rape--he paid for his daughter to take a secret trip to Northern California to see her boyfriend--as long as the girl's mother, Whelchel's ex-wife, wasn't told.
But Whelchel, now 42, hadn't bought permanent silence after all.
Eventually, the girl told her mom, Glenda, about the sex crimes. Those revelations prompted the girl's stepsister to describe how Whelchel had repeatedly molested her too while she was growing up.
An alarmed Glenda went to police who arranged for a recorded pre-text telephone call to Whelchel. During that call, Glenda told him that the girls might think the sex had been their fault and he told her to tell them it was not.
"It still ain't gonna go away," said Whelchel, who was driving a vehicle at the time of the call.
He then said that he'd swallowed 80 Advil PM pills and had nothing to live for.
When one of his daughters got on the phone, he said he was very sorry for what he'd done, according to court records.
Later that night, Whelchel was involved in a head-on collision on Interstate 5. Police arrested him, and OC prosecutors charged him with 16 sex crimes involving incest.
But at trial he claimed that he had no recollection of talking to his ex-wife and a daughter on the phone. The allegations were "bullshit," he said. He'd wanted to kill himself, he now claimed, because he thought the false charges would cost him his job.
He also fumed that a judge had violated his constitutional rights by blocking his defense lawyer from attacking his daughter's alleged sexual relationship with her boyfriend.
A California Court of Appeal based in Santa Ana this week rejected Whelchel's complaints as meaningless and approved of his prison sentence: 21 years and four months.

Swastika: Native American traditions
The swastika shape was used by some Native Americans. It has been found in excavations of Mississippian-era sites in the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys. It is frequently used as a motif on objects associated with the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex(S.E.C.C.). It was also widely used by many southwestern tribes, most notably the Navajo. Among various tribes, the swastika carried different meanings. To the Hopi it represented the wandering Hopi clan; to the Navajo it was one symbol for a whirling log (tsil no'oli'), a sacred image representing a legend that was used in healing rituals (after learning of the Nazi association, the Navajo discontinued use of the symbol). A brightly colored First Nations saddle featuring swastika designs is on display at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Canada.
A swastika shape is a symbol in the culture of the Kuna people of Kuna Yala, Panama. In Kuna tradition, it symbolizes the octopus that created the world; its tentacles, pointing to the four cardinal points.
In February, 1925, the Kuna revolted vigorously against Panamanian suppression of their culture, and assumed autonomy in 1930; the flag they adopted at that time is based on the swastika shape, and remains the official flag of Kuna Yala. A number of variations on the flag have been used over the years: red top and bottom bands instead of orange were previously used, and in 1942 a ring (representing the traditional Kuna nose-ring) was added to the center of the flag to distance it from the symbol of the Nazi party.

Marine charged with hurling kitten against wall
FOX 5 San Diego Staff
3:45 PM PDT, July 28, 2010
SAN DIEGO - A U.S. Marine faces a felony animal cruelty charge for allegedly hurling a kitten into a patio wall at a friend's Midtown home, leaving its owner saddled with thousands of dollars in veterinary bills, the San Diego Humane Society announced today.
Fernando Pacheco, 27, is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday afternoon, said Candice Eley, a spokeswoman for the animal welfare agency.
During a June 11 visit to the home of the kitten's owner, Pacheco allegedly threw the 4-month-old feline about 15 feet after it scratched or nipped him, according to Eley.
The cat, named Cullen, required emergency care for a broken leg, as well as head trauma and bloody eyes and nose. The animal has fully recovered, but his owner had to pay about $5,000 in veterinary bills due to the injuries.
The animal hospital that treated Cullen reported the alleged attack to the Humane Society, which investigated and forwarded its findings to the District Attorney's Office, Eley said.

Church plans Quran-burning event (i.e. Bullshitters plan Bullshit-burning event)
By Lauren Russell, CNN
July 31, 2010 -- Updated 0450 GMT (1250 HKT)
(CNN) -- In protest of what it calls a religion "of the devil," a nondenominational church in Gainesville, Florida, plans to host an "International Burn a Quran Day" on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.
The Dove World Outreach Center says it is hosting the event to remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
"We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times," Pastor Terry Jones told CNN's Rick Sanchez earlier this week.
Jones wrote a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," and the church sells coffee mugs and shirts featuring the phrase.
Muslims and many other Christians -- including some evangelicals -- are fighting the initiative.
The church launched a YouTube channel to disseminate its messages.
"I mean ask yourself, have you ever really seen a really happy Muslim? As they're on the way to Mecca? As they gather together in the mosque on the floor? Does it look like a real religion of joy?" Jones asks in one of his YouTube posts.
"No, to me it looks like a religion of the devil."
The Islamic advocacy group Council on American-Islamic Relations called on Muslims and others to host "Share the Quran" dinners to educate the public during the monthlong fast of Ramadan beginning in August. In a news release, the group announced a campaign to give out 100,000 copies of the Quran to local, state and national leaders.
"American Muslims and other people of conscience should support positive educational efforts to prevent the spread of Islamophobia," said CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper in the release.
The National Association of Evangelicals, the nation's largest umbrella evangelical group, issued a statement urging the church to cancel the event, warning it could cause worldwide tension between the two religions.
"The NAE calls on its members to cultivate relationships of trust and respect with our neighbors of other faiths. God created human beings in his image, and therefore all should be treated with dignity and respect," it said in the statement.
Dove's Facebook page, set up for the September event, has more than 1,600 fans.
"Eternal fire is the only destination the Quran can lead people to, so we want to put the Quran in it's [sic] place -- the fire!" the page says.
But another Facebook group with more than 3,100 fans says it stands "against the disrespect and intolerance that these people have for the Muslim people" and encourages people to report Dove's page to Facebook.
Targeting another group it calls "godless," the Dove center is also hosting a protest against Gainesville Mayor Craig Lowe, who is openly gay, on Monday at Gainesville's City Hall. The group previously fought -- unsuccessfully -- to derail Lowe's election campaign.
"We protest sexual perversion because the Bible protests it. ... What is acceptable to today's leadership becomes acceptable to tomorrow's society," the church says in its blog entry about the event.
Lowe and other government figures and media outlets received e-mails from the church about the event, The Gainesville Sun reported. Lowe isn't concerned with Monday's event.
"I've got other things to do," he said, The Sun reports.
On the outreach center's front lawn, alongside a sign reading "Aug. 2 Protest, No Homo Mayor, City Hall," stands not just one, but three signs bearing the slogan "Islam is of the Devil."
One of the signs -- one reading "Islam" on one side, "Devil" on the other -- was vandalized. On its blog last week, the church said the sign will be replaced.
"This is private property and vandalism is a crime here in America," the blog says. "In Islam, many actions that we consider to be crimes are encouraged, condoned or sheltered under Islamic teaching and practice, though. Another reason to burn a Quran."

GORDON COUNTY, Ga. -- Police in Gordon County said a slaying suspect was shot by police several times after he threatened officers with a gun. Officials said the suspect shot two teenagers before abducting a woman and killing her.
Sheriff Mitch Ralston said officers responded to reports of shots fired at a home on Highway 41 near Resaca at about 6 p.m. Thursday.
Deputies found two men, ages 19 and 17 years old, had been shot. One teen had been shot in the back and the other was shot in the leg. Both were transported to local hospitals. Their conditions have not been released.
Witnesses told detectives that a woman had been forcibly abducted from the home and forced into a black Chevrolet Camaro by the gunman. Witnesses told police the gunman was threatening the woman as he took her away.
Detectives identified the suspect as Paul Buchannan, 38, of Calhoun.
Police said they were able to track the missing woman’s cell phone signal to a remote location near the Hill City community near the Whitfield County line. Deputies found the Camaro parked next to railroad tracks near Hill City Road and executed a search.
Deputies said shortly after beginning their search, they found the woman’s body on the railroad tracks. Police said she had died from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
Other police agencies, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Georgia State Patrol, joined the manhunt for Buchannan. Helicopters and K9 Units were also used to search.
Police said just before 10 p.m., a bloodhound and deputies confronted Buchannan in a very thickly wooded area. Officers said Buchannan threatened the officers with his gun and was shot several times.
No officers were injured.
Buchannan was taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn. His condition is unknown.
Police said they plan to charge Buchannan with murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault and firearms violations.
The woman’s name is not being released pending notification of next of kin.
The investigation is continuing.

Grizzly euthanized after fatal mauling that perplexes experts
By Tom Watkins, CNN
July 31, 2010 -- Updated 0129 GMT (0929 HKT)
(CNN) -- A grizzly bear was euthanized Friday after a DNA test determined that it mauled three campers -- one of them fatally -- in a remote area of Montana, an attack that has perplexed wildlife experts.
"We just can't figure it out," said Ron Aasheim, a spokesman for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. "It doesn't make any sense."
All the food in the campground was stored properly in bear-proof containers; the attack was unprovoked; the bear had no history of attacking humans, Aasheim said. "It's a head scratcher."
The incident unfolded around 2 a.m. Wednesday, when a caller to the Park County Sheriff's Department said someone had been bitten in Soda Butte Campgrounds outside Yellowstone National Park.
"My daughter's boyfriend got bit by a bear just a little bit ago; there's another lady down there that's screaming," the caller to 911 told police.
When parks officials showed up, they "found a dead man, partially consumed, 25 feet from his tent," Aasheim said.
The body was identified as Kevin Kammer, from Grand Rapids, Michigan, who had been on a solo fishing trip, Aasheim said. Reached at the family's house, Kammer's son said he did not want to discuss the matter.
The carnage continued, though with less dire results: 21-year-old Ronald Singer of Alamosa, Colorado, was with his girlfriend and her father about 100 yards from Kammer when he was bitten on the leg.
"I felt the tent just slide two to three feet and this giant thing was on my leg," Singer told NBC's "Today Show."
"I turned the light on and I screamed while he was punching the bear and the bear took off," said Singer's girlfriend, Maria Fleming.
Another 400 yards away Deb Freele, 58, of London, Ontario, was with her husband when she was attacked. "I screamed and he bit down harder," she told ABC's "Good Morning America." "I screamed some more and he continued to bite and shake and I could hear my bones breaking. I decided I was just going to play dead, and I went completely limp like a rag doll and, after a few seconds, he loosened his grip and he left."
The three attacks likely occurred within about an hour, Aasheim said.
Park authorities called in a human wildlife attack-response team, which searched the campground -- from which the "couple of dozen" other campers had been evacuated -- for evidence, including hair and scat samples, Aasheim said.
Among the finds: a bear tooth fragment.
Once the evidence had been collected, officials set up Kammer's tent, attached it to a baited bear trap -- and waited.
At 6 p.m., the female returned, tore the tent down and was trapped; on Thursday, her three yearling cubs were also trapped, he said.
DNA tests matched bear saliva found on Kammer with the DNA of the mother bear; the broken tooth matched a tooth that was broken in her mouth; and tent and sleeping bag material were found in her scat, he said.
Once the DNA match was made, the animal was euthanized.
Authorities had little choice, said Grey Stafford, director of conservation and communications at the Wildlife World Zoo Aquarium in Litchfield Park, Arizona.
"When you have a dangerous predator like that -- that has no fear of humans -- you've really got a dangerous situation and I think wildlife managers understand there's very little wiggle room here on what to do," he told HLN's "Prime News."
An autopsy will be carried out "to see if there was something haywire," Aasheim said, adding that the autopsy was expected to find human remains in the animal's stomach.
The cubs will be taken to a zoo, he said.
"Obviously, they're not good candidates for being released back in the wild because of that learning event," Stafford said, referring to the possibility that the cubs may have watched their mother attack the campers. "But I do think that, because they're youngsters and they're still rather plastic in their learning, that there is some room for optimism."
Though incidents of bears attacking humans are rare, they are usually associated with food. In 1987, a bear pulled a camper from a tent near West Yellowstone and partially ate him, Aasheim said. But in that case, the man had not been as diligent about storing his food, he said.
And in 2001, an elk hunter was dressing an elk when he was attacked and killed by a grizzly, he said.
"We say a fed bear is a dead bear," he said. "Once a bear starts becoming acclimated to food, once they understand and associate humans or homes with food, that's typically bad. In most cases, those bears end up dead. We relocate them once or twice, unless they've had contact with a human. If they have contact or taste the flesh of a human, they're dead. That is the line they cannot cross."
But Stafford said there is no way to remove all danger. "We have got to remember, as we move further and further into the forests and spend more time in the wild, these kinds of encounters are going to happen," he said.

DULUTH, Ga. -- Duluth police said an argument between a son and his parents escalated to violence Saturday afternoon.
Investigators said a man pulled a gun on his parents, grazing his mother with a bullet and seriously wounding his father. Paramedics rushed the two to Gwinnett Medical Center, where the father later died, according to another son. Police took the son involved into police custody.
The shooting occurred during the noon hour Saturday inside a home in the 3300 block of Enfield Lane near Enfield Way in Duluth.
Family members and neighbors told Channel 2 Action News reporter Tony Thomas that they were unaware of any longstanding problems in the family.
“We never had any problems,” said Carlos Harris, a relative.

Update: Texas Man Gets Death Penalty for Beheading 3 Kids Under the Age of Four
July 30, 2010 10:12 AM
EDINBURG, Texas (CBS/AP/KGBT) A south Texas jury sentenced John Allen Rubio to death on Thursday, four days after convicting him of murder for beheading his common law wife's three children in 2003.
The jurors had deliberated for about four hours.
"I'm sorry it all had to come to this," Rubio said in an open court. "I thank the jury for giving me a chance to show what I could."
It was the second time the south Texas man has been sentenced to death for the slayings. He was convicted of killing the children all under the age of four - smothering, stabbing and ultimately decapitating them - in a windowless Brownsville apartment.
Gonzalez, who said he had sentenced more people to death than any judge in south Texas, said he recognized that a lot of people went through what Rubio did, citing his abusive and troubled childhood.
"I don't know what happened, but I know what this jury found," Gonzalez said. "I have never seen a crime like this."
Jurors on Monday found Rubio guilty on four counts of capital murder - one charge for each child and one for the children together.
Rubio was previously convicted of the murders in 2003 and sentenced to death. But a state appeals court overturned his conviction in 2007 because statements from the children's mother, Angela Camacho, were wrongly allowed as evidence during the trial. Camacho pleaded guilty and is serving a life sentence for her role in the slayings.
At his current trial, Rubio pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but the jury rejected that defense.
CBS affiliate KGBT reports that attorney Larry Warner, who will be representing Rubio in his appeal, says that Rubio's appeal of the verdict is automatic.
"The appeal is automatic, you don't even have to file the notice of appeal," said Warner. It could take, he said, four or five months for the case to reach the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, and once there, the nine judges will determine if the conviction and sentence should stand.
Rubio attorney Ed Stapleton said the result saddened him.
"I've gotten to know this man over the last three years, so to think of him dying on a gurney is very difficult," Stapleton said. Texas executes by lethal injection.
"He misses those children more than anyone else alive," Stapleton said.
"I think there's a special place in hell for Mr. Rubio," said Cameron County prosecutor Charles Mattingly.

Dog Euthanized After Killing 2-Year-Old Tierrasanta Boy
Attack Reported 11:30 AM At 3529 Lofberg St.

TIERRASANTA, Calif. -- A 2-year-old boy in Tierrasanta was killed in his home Saturday by his family's German Shepard dog, according to San Diego police.
Police received a call around 11:30 a.m. reporting the attack at 3529 Lofberg St., said Sgt. Ray Battrick of SDPD.
The child was brought to Rady Children's Hospital in Serra Mesa but did not survive, Battrick said. His name was not immediately released.
He said the boy's mother was at home during the attack and his father is deployed in military service.
The dog was secured and animal control officers were called to the scene, Battrick said. Detectives are investigating the incident for any possible child abuse, Battrick said.
Neighbors like Britney Bergwitz are shocked something like this could happen.
"I heard the mom was asleep on the couch and the dog was just walking around and the dog started chewing on the baby's face," Bergwitz told 10News. "I don't understand why she was sleeping on the couch while her baby was walking around and the dog was out too."
But neighbor Kristy Marks said she was not surprised.
"You hear about this all the time. That's why I don't have a dog," she said. Marks is the mother of a 1-year-old and believes having a dog could endanger her child.
"Even if they have them from a puppy [and] they think they love their family... they can always always go crazy," said Marks.
County Animal Services told 10News the family had the dog euthanized Saturday evening.

Can a Government Shut Down a Church? In Avondale Estates, the Answer is Apparently "Yes."

Lodged at the dead end of a street near a busy train line, the vacant cinderblock building was, until this spring, the Christ Liberty Family Life Center. Its doors abruptly closed when the city of Avondale Estates ordered the church to get out of this building.
The city shut down the church because Avondale Estate requires a three acre plot of land for churches -- a standard not required in other jurisdictions. Avondale Estates city manager Clay Brown says the law has been on the books more than twenty years.
"To me it's a little bit odd," said Joe Garigulo, the property owner and church's landlord. "Especially since you're dealing with a vacant building on a dead end street that backs up to a railroad. surrounded by industrial."
In a statement, the church's attorneys say "Avondale Estates puts this onerous requirment only on religious facilities and not on other places of public assembly." The church is suing the city in Federal court.
"I don't see anything wrong with people trying to get a little bit of Jesus," said Garigulo. The church's pastor was unavailable for comment.
The Christ Liberty Family Life Center's effects are still inside the vacant building -- pews, a pulpit, musical instruments, a Bible. Once at more than fifty, the church congregation has dwindled to about fifteen, according to the church's Chicago attorney Lee McCoy.
Although the church no longer meets in the cinderblock building, what's left of its congregation has relocated across the street.
It now shares the adjacent building space with a metal recycling company that just happens to be outside the jurisdiction of the city of Avondale Estates.

"He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches."
"Being is substance and life; life manifests by movement; movement is perpetuated by equilibrium; equilibrium is therefore the law of immortality.
"The doctrine of equality!... But there exists no more poisonous poison: for it seems to be preached by justice itself, while it is the end of justice.... "Equality for equals, inequality for unequals" that would be the true voice of justice: and, what follows from it, "Never make equal what is unequal."
