Man Turns Super Soaker Water Gun into Real Shotgun

FRESNO, Calif. -- Police arrested a 54-year-old man Saturday night for carrying a shotgun disguised as a Super Soaker water gun.

Officers on patrol saw a Randy Smith carrying what appeared to be a Super Soaker water gun on a rifle sling around his neck, Sgt. Rick de Jong told the Fresno Bee.

But when the officers got closer, they realized the toy had been turned into a home-made shotgun, de Jong said.

"He took the Super Soaker apart, was able to fashion a barrel to where he was able to make what's considered a zip gun, where you can fire one round through it," Sgt. Mark Hudson told KMPH News.

The weapon was loaded with a 20-gauge shotgun shell.

Man kills wife at Tulare County labor camp

A Tulare County sheriff's SWAT team forced its way into a home Monday where a man allegedly shot and killed his wife, deputies reported. The deadly dispute began earlier in the day at the Woodville Farm Labor Camp on Road 192 and Avenue 160.

Eleazar Alcantar, 50, left the home after an argument, but he later returned and shot his wife, Maria Ceballos Alcantar, 38, deputies said. Two adult children were in the home but left after the shooting.

Man charged with slapping loud kid in Kent theater

An Auburn man accused of smacking a loud 10-year-old at a Kent movie theater could face months in jail if convicted of the felony assault charge now filed against him.

King County prosecutors contend 21-year-old Yong Hyun Kim knocked out one of the boy’s teeth after the child and several other youths refused to quiet down and stop throwing popcorn in April.

According to charging documents, Kim admitted to hitting the boy and appeared ashamed when confronted by police with the boy’s age. Kim allegedly said he thought the boy was an adult when he slapped him in the face.

Gwynedd rapist Alexander Thomas gets indeterminate jail

A sex attacker has been told by a judge he showed "contempt and arrogance" towards women as he was given an indeterminate sentence for five rapes.

Alexander Thomas, 27, of Penygroes, Gwynedd, must serve six years before being considered for parole. His victims were 21, 17 and 14 at the time, Caernarfon Crown Court heard.

The former Bangor University student, who denied the charges, raped the 14-year-old in the university gardens as she went home from school. Judge Dafydd Hughes told Thomas he displayed "contempt and arrogance and an almost flippant attitude" towards the way he treated young women.

Judge Hughes said his youngest victim had been raped three times and Thomas had shown disregard for anyone who was vulnerable.

Gordon Hennell, prosecuting, said two of the women had self-harmed after their ordeal and the other said she felt isolated and scarred.

Simon Mills, defending, said Thomas would find being in prison for a long time a "very difficult experience."

A gang of six tortured a roommate for hours in the basement of their home, binding his feet, stapling his lips shut and using a power tool on him, according to police.

Jennifer Moses, 30, Lee Carl Moses, 26, David Masters, 55, Paula Masters, 43, Brandon Haggard, 20 and 45-year-old Tracy Jordan kidnapped the man late on Saturday evening.

The suspects were suspicious about their new roommate, 41-year-old Thomas Chapman, who moved into the house in Magna, near Salt Lake City, Utah ten days ago.

Police said the six men and women held the roommate at gunpoint throughout his ordeal. Chapman was handcuffed, had his ears and chest stapled and a Dremel drill used on him.

The roommates struck him multiple times with objects including a crutch, keyboard, laptop and the butt of a shotgun.

Police, neighbors and friends struggled to unravel the mysterious deaths of a Nebraska woman and her 10-year-old son that began with them appearing to go on an excursion and ended with their bodies found deep in the woods of an Iowa state park.

Charlotte Schilling, 41, of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, and her son, Owen, had been missing since May 10, when the mother checked the boy out of his elementary school. It was not unusual for the stay-at-home mother-of-three to surprise her children with short road trips to parks, zoos and other nearby attractions, relatives said.

Two Canadians killed in Atlantic City

Two Canadian women visiting Atlantic City were stabbed to death Monday in what police believe was a botched attempted robbery.

According to pressofAtlanticCity, police officer Jacob Abbruscato witnessed the unprovoked attack and drew his weapon in a bid to stop the bloody assault.

The victims, aged 47 and 80, were alive when an ambulance arrived about 10 a.m., but died from their wounds in the afternoon at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus.

Both women, who reports say was from Scarborough, had been stabbed several times in the upper body.

Five dead, 15 missing in wreck off Mayotte

Two adults and three children died and 15 people went missing when a boat sank off the French overseas territory of Mayotte, the government said on Sunday.

The fishing boat was carrying 43 people from the nearby independent nation of the Comoros, the overseas ministry said in a statement.

"The provisional toll is 19 people survived, 15 were missing and five bodies were found, including those of three children," it said.

One of the children was a baby.

Dad-of-three faces 36 abuse charges

A father who allegedly bashed his three children with a machete and cricket bats during a three-year reign of terror is facing eight years behind bars.

Police allege the 43-year-old West Auckland dad frequently beat his three children, now aged between 6 and 14, with garden rakes, tree branches and metal pipes from a vacuum cleaner.

When one of the children tried to run away, the father chased him into traffic and he was struck by a car.

The man appeared in the Waitakere District Court on Friday for a sentencing indication where his wheelchair-bound wife broke down in tears as the 36 charges against him were read out. He cannot be named to protect the identity of the children.

The father turned on his 8-year-old son by whacking him with the flat part of a machete while he was sleeping, causing him to fall off the top of his bunk bed on to the floor where he continued to beat him.

Two men arrested over killings of Chinese students in LA

Two young men have were arrested Friday in the killings of two Chinese graduate students who were shot to death near the University of Southern California campus last month, police said.

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said Javier Bolden, 19, and Bryan Barnes, 20, were arrested on suspicion of the murders after material evidence directly linked both suspects to the crime scene.

Barnes was arrested at a home near campus Friday afternoon, and Bolden was arrested a few hours later in Palmdale, Beck said. Both were being held without bail.

Four brothers and a sister were jailed in Germany for the killing their sister who the judge said was simply a “little girl who wanted to be happy”, but whose choice of German boyfriend was not tolerated by her family.

Hostile crowd delays treatment for man fatally shot in Rainier Beach

Police say a hostile crowd delayed emergency responders from helping a man as he lay dying from multiple gunshot wounds Wednesday night in the parking lot of a South Seattle fast food restaurant.

The 31-year-old man was fatally shot at a Rainier Beach Jack in the Box, the second gun violence in the same block in a week.

The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he died in the emergency room, according to a nursing supervisor. Officers, just down the street, arrived moments after receiving a 911 call reporting gunshots during a disturbance.

Man arrested over roasted foetuses

SIX human foetuses which had been roasted and covered in gold leaf as part of a black magic ritual have been seized from a British citizen in Bangkok, Thai police said today.

Chow Hok Kuen, 28, who is of Taiwanese origin, was arrested with the grisly haul in the city's Chinatown yesterday, police said. The corpses had been packed into luggage and were set to be smuggled to Taiwan.

The suspect bought the foetuses several days ago from a Taiwanese man in Thailand for 200,000 baht ($6500) and planned to sell them in Taiwan for up to six times that amount, police said. The origin of the foetuses was unclear.

"He said he planned to sell the foetuses to clients who believe they will make them lucky and rich," said Colonel Wiwat Kamchamnan of Bangkok police.

The man faces one year in prison and a 2000 baht fine for possession of the foetuses.

In Thai black magic rituals, also observed among some Chinese communities, preserved foetuses are believed to bring good fortune to the owner and are often kept in shrines within homes or businesses.

In the 1899 book Bohemian Paris of To-Day by William Chambers Morrow and Édouard Cucuel, the authors visit several of the City of Lights darker drinking destinations, such as the Cabaret du Néant ("The Cabaret of Nothingness") in the neighborhood of Montmartre.

At this gothic nightspot, visitors pondered their own mortality as they drank on coffins and were served libations (named after diseases) by monks and funeral attendees.

Young woman killed herself after blowing whistle on rapist father who is now facing jail

A tragic woman killed herself after breaking her silence about what her father had done to her as a child. The court heard it wasn't until 2010, that Claire Warrener felt able to report the sex abuse she had suffered.

She went to the police six years after the attacks she suffered at the hands of her father Michael Warrener had ended.

She took her own life when she was barely into her 20s, just months after going to the authorities.

Boxer, 77, who trained with Henry Cooper, beats up two club-wielding thugs after home attack

In his younger days, pensioner Michael Mather was used to sparring in the ring with boxing legend Henry Cooper.

But more recently he has dusted off his fighting skills to put up a fight against two brutal thugs who attacked him outside his home in Ilford, Essex.

The 77-year-old was hit on the head with a wooden club as they tried to force their way into his house while he loaded his car.

Proving he can still throw a good punch, Mr Mather hit one of them in the face and the pair, in their late teens, fled the scene.

A former city hall administrator and his wife shot themselves in a shocking double suicide at a secluded cemetery.

Teen admits killing retired teacher

Teenager Lori-Lea Waiora Te Wini has pleaded guilty to the 2008 murder of a retired Opotiki schoolteacher, four days before her retrial was set to begin.

In the High Court at Rotorua today Te Wini pleaded guilty to murdering John Rowe at his home on November 25, 2008. She was 14 at the time.

Seven killed in Farah compound raid

At least six policemen and a civilian have been killed and 13 wounded in a suicide attack on a governor's compound in western Afghanistan, police say.

Four attackers were killed in the assault in Farah province - one blew himself up at the gate and the others fought their way inside the compound.

They were shot dead after a gun battle lasting nearly an hour.

A homeless man is accused of stabbing another library user in the chest after he allegedly saw him watch porn on his computer.

Ralph Neptune, 46, is said to have attacked a 52-year-old man in the Brooklyn Heights branch of the public library last night.

Neptune, who was with his wife at the time, was said to be enraged when he looked over and saw the porn playing on the victim's screen.

A teacher told her students that she is Mary Magdalene and that she is planning her wedding too Jesus Christ as she is pregnant with her child.

Imelda Paredes, a Spanish teacher at the San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy in Texas, told her ninth-grade students that they could speak to God through her one of her eyes.

The teacher was soon removed from the classroom after some of her students informed school officials about her speech as another filmed the 12-minute rant on his cell phone.

In the video, Paredes speaks mostly in Spanish, but she can be heard asking her students in English: 'Is there anybody that wants to speak to Jesus? He's watching you.'

Two Polish men were jailed for life yesterday for killing a former friend by stuffing paper into his clothes and setting him on fire.

Pawel Lysonik, 22, and Kamil Semrau, 28, murdered their victim by turning him into a 'human barbecue'.

Lithuanian Ramunas Raulinautis, 34, was found by a passer-by who described his appearance as 'like a scene from a horror film', Cardiff Crown Court heard.

Eye-witness Derek Storey told the court: 'I ran out to find him completely engulfed in flames from head to toe like a human barbecue.'

Horror as girl, 11, drowns after jumping off bridge for a dare

An 11-year-old girl who drowned in a pond behind her school is thought to have jumped off a bridge after being dared by her classmates.

Jordan Oliver was overheard telling friends she couldn't swim shortly before she leapt into the water in what was believed to be a game of 'bridge jumping', it has been claimed.

The youngster had already jumped from the bridge once and had managed to pull herself to safety.

However, on her second attempt witnesses saw her first resurface before disappearing under the water, it has been reported.

Her lifeless body was pulled from the 12-foot deep pond in Bolingbrook, Illinois, about an hour after emergency services arrived, police said.

The Great Serpent Mound

The Great Serpent Mound in southern Ohio is one of the few surviving relics of the mound builders. It is a 1,330-foot-long, three-foot-high prehistoric effigy mound. The earliest records say it was a depiction of a serpent that was swallowing an egg. One of the more interesting theories as to the origin of the shape is that it represents an explanation of the phases of the moon, by the representation of a snake swallowing it.
