SPRAGUE — A Norwich Superior Court judge today ordered a Baltic man held on $500,000 on charges he stabbed his ex-girlfriend while she was holding their 15-month-old child.
Dressed in a baggy orange coverall in handcuffs and ankle shackles, 22-year-old William Porucznik was arraigned on charges of attempted murder, first-degree reckless endangerment, breach of peace and risk of injury to a minor.
Judge Robert Young issued a protective order barring any contact with the victim and ordered Porucznik held under a suicide watch and mental health evaluation.
Responding to a 911 call from a neighbor shortly before midnight Tuesday, state police were called to an apartment at 13 School Hill Road in Sprague where they found Porucznik sitting on the floor holding a knife to his throat. He dropped the knife when ordered by Trooper Timothy Bettencourt.
The 25-year-old female victim came out of the bedroom holding the infant and a cloth to her neck where police said she sustained several lacerations. Police also discovered she had a stab wound to her back with half of a steak knife still lodged in her body.
The woman was taken to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich and then transferred to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence for surgery.
The woman said she was with her new boyfriend in Norwich when Porucznik lured her to his home by sending text messages indicating their child was ill. When she got to the home, he attacked her, police said.
Porucznik put a knife to her throat while she was holding the child and when she tried to get away, police said he stabbed her in the back.
In an interview with police, Porucznik said he blacked out and did not remember much of what happened. Police noted a near empty bottle of mango vodka at the scene.
A bail commissioner said Porucznik, who works at Staples in Killingly, does not have any prior arrests. The case was continued to March 1.
