16 feared dead as firemen cut victims free of burning wreckage following 27-vehicle smash on M5

At least 16 people were feared dead today after a 27-vehicle crash on the M5 with the death toll expected to rise further.

The horror smash on the northbound carriageway of near Taunton, Somerset, involved 23 cars and vans and four lorries.

It is thought 43 motorists were hurt in the accident with the number of dead expected to rise to 21, according to police sources. Eight of the casualties are believed to be critically injured.

Television footage showed motorists trying to pry open vehicle doors in a bid to rescue those trapped in last night's carnage which happened at 8.30pm in Taunton, Somerset.
