Strangled by a security guard, British teacher aged 26 who went to Cuba because of its low crime rate

Lara Jones had read that Cuba was a haven for female travellers, with the lowest crime rate in the Western hemisphere. So she headed to Havana alone, having picked out a hostel owned by the government with round-the-clock security. But despite doing everything to ensure her safety, the 26-year-old teacher was strangled and smothered to death in an apparently motiveless killing after a security guard crept into her bedroom. The unnamed guard was arrested ten days later, and appeared before the secretive Cuban courts. He admitted murder, and was jailed for 22 years. He gave no explanation for the killing and police remain baffled, having found no signs of sexual assault and nothing taken from Miss Jones’s room.
