BEIRUT (Reuters) - Twenty-one people, including four children and six women, were killed when a minibus hit a mine in the southern Syrian town of Noa on Wednesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said. Opposition activists told the Observatory the minibus drove over a mine planted by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. There was no immediate comment from the government.

Thai official says plane crash in Laos kills 44

BANGKOK (AP) — A Laos Airlines flight crashed Wednesday in the Southeast Asian country, killing all 44 people aboard, an official in neighboring Thailand said. Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee said the flight from the Lao capital of Vientiane to Pakse in southern Laos crashed at about 4 p.m. Lao time. He said the flight crashed 7-8 kilometers (4-5 miles) short of the international airport at Pakse. Reports by China's official Xinhua News Agency and Thai media said the plane crashed in the Mekong River. Sek said five Thai nationals were among the 39 passengers. Five crew members were also aboard.

TOKYO — More details emerged Thursday about the murder of an 18-year-old school girl who was fatally stabbed in Mitaka, Tokyo, on Tuesday night, allegedly by an ex-boyfriend who was stalking her. Charles Thomas Ikenaga, 21, who is from Kyoto, has been charged with the murder of Saaya Suzuki, whom he met on Facebook two years ago. The couple dated until about a year ago. Suzuki first asked her school principal for advice on Oct 4 after she received email death threats from Ikenaga. The principal advised her to contact the police. Suzuki and her parents visited police at around 9 a.m. Tuesday to report that Ikenaga had loitered outside their home several times and turned up at places where she used to go, after she started blocking his emails and phone calls on her cell phone in June.

The police officer who spoke with them called Ikenaga’s cell phone three times Tuesday, but his calls were not answered, police said. NHK reported Thursday that during police questioning, Ikenaga said that he climbed up the outside of Suzuki’s house on Tuesday afternoon and hid in a downstairs closet for about two hours. Suzuki returned home at around 4:30 p.m., at which time a police officer called her to see if she had got home safely. She said she was OK and they spoke for about 20 minutes. Ikenaga told police he emerged from the closet after the phone call and stabbed Suzuki twice in the stomach and arm near the front door, NHK reported. When Suzuki ran outside, Ikenaga chased her and jumped on top of her, stabbing her in the neck. A witness saw him flee the scene. Suzuki was taken to hospital where she died a short time later due to loss of blood, police said. Ikenaga was arrested nearby 90 minutes later. He admitted buying a knife with the intention of killing Suzuki because she wouldn’t get back together with him, police said.

A Chinese villager with no medical background reportedly amputated his own leg using nothing but a fruit knife, a hacksaw and a wooden back scratcher after a mysterious infection took hold of one of his limbs and doctors gave him just a month to live. Until last year, Zheng Yanliang, 47 from a village in the northern province of Hebei, was known as the local “tough guy”, according to a report in the Shijiazhuang Daily newspaper. But early one morning in January 2012, Mr Zheng woke at his home in Dongzang to sharp pains in his belly and legs. He headed straight to the local surgery where GPs puzzled over his condition and administered a painkilling injection. Baffled by Mr Zheng’s complaint, they packed him off on a lonely and ultimately futile traipse through China’s chronically underfunded healthcare system, first in the nearby city of Baoding and then in Beijing. In the Chinese capital, hospital doctors diagnosed him with a rare and apparently incurable disease that had taken hold of his lower limbs for “an unknown reason,” the newspaper claimed.

They concluded Mr Zheng would be dead within the month, handed his family a hefty medical bill and sent the now penniless farmer back home to die. Three months on, however, and Mr Zheng was still very much alive albeit unable to sleep and surviving on a diet of prescription drugs. At night his ghoulish howls kept Dongzang awake, the newspaper claimed, and soon his condition deteriorated further: purple spots began to appear on his right leg and the skin turned black. Mr Zheng's impoverished family had no money to pay for surgery and when he implored the village doctor to amputate the limb he was rebuffed. “The doctor dared not do so,” his wife, Shen Zhonghong, told the Shijiazhuang Daily. It was then that a desperate Mr Zheng decided to take his fate, quite literally, into his own hands.

SAITAMA — A man crashed his truck into the front of his neighbors’ house, then slashed four occupants with a saw, in Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture, on Thursday morning. According to police, the truck driver, identified as Akihio Hirata, 40, set fire to his apartment and then rammed his 2-ton delivery truck into the the front of the house next door at about 6:20 a.m., TBS reported. Police said Hirata slashed four occupants of the house, including an 84-year-old man, his wife and daughter-in-law. Then he went up to the second floor, tied a rope around his neck and was trying to hang himself when another neighbor who had come to help, subdued him until police arrived. The neighbor also received cuts but police said neither he nor the occupants of the house had life-threatening injuries. Hirata has been speaking incoherently, police said, adding that the victims said they had never any trouble with him, TBS reported.

Salon owner killed after swallowing a shard of GLASS in mustard that was served with her steak

A businesswoman was killed when a piece of glass in mustard she ate with a piece of steak pierced an artery. Fay Wesley, 68, was unable to breathe after her throat started to swell, cutting off her airways when the shard pierced her carotid artery. The last word she said the her husband, Alan, were 'pat me on the back' before she started panicking and tried to run out of their £300,000 home near Upper Bucklebury, Berkshire. The families of four French pensioners who died after taking a blood-thinning drug have launched legal action against the drug's German manufacturer and France's national agency for medication safety, it emerged on Wednesday. The four families have decided to bring charges of “involuntary homicide” or manslaughter, against ANSM, France’s National Agency for the Safety of Health Products, and Boehringer Ingelheim, the German pharmaceutical which makes Pradaxa, the families’ lawyer said on Wednesday. Their loved ones, who were aged between 78 and 84 and living in or near Paris, Lille, Strasbourg and Grenoble, died of haemorrhages earlier this year after taking Pradaxa, a prescribed anticoagulant medication. Mother on trial for suffocating 5-year-old son over Nintendo DS argument

TOKYO — A 42-year-old mother of four has gone on trial in Tokyo, accused of killing her five-year-old son. Teary-eyed and clinging to a handkerchief as she spoke, Shizu Shigeta admitted that she had caused the death of her son, Koshi, after sealing him inside two plastic garbage bags and then falling asleep beside him while under the influence of sedatives and alcohol. The mother, who had lived with her husband and children in Mejiro, Tokyo, listened as the prosecution recounted the events leading up to the tragic death of the kindergartener.

On the evening of Sept 1, 2012, allegedly feeling under pressure from work and suffering from lack of sleep, Shigeta was angered to find the living room floor of their family home littered with toys. Grabbing a garbage bag, she began tidying up, stuffing her son’s Nintendo DS in the bag in the process. She headed to bed soon after, hoping to sleep late the next day as it was a Sunday. As she had done on several nights prior to the incident, the seemingly troubled mother swallowed a sleeping pill, washing it down with a glass of shochu whiskey and water. Despite taking the sedative, however, Shigeta woke twice in the night. Both times, she got up and took another sleeping pill, eventually dozing off and sleeping soundly until around 11 a.m. the next day.

When Shigeta rose the next morning, she found her third son, Koshi, in the living room already up and about. When his mother entered the living room, he immediately asked her for his missing Nintendo DS. Like any good parent, Shigeta resolved to teach her son that it was not acceptable to spend his days simply doing exactly as he pleased and not tidying up after himself. Angered by her son’s tone and, she maintains, still drowsy from the pills she had taken, however, the mother’s response to her son’s request was far from normal. “Would you rather breathe or play DS?” she asked the young boy.

Perhaps not sensing his mother’s tone, or, as many young boys do, simply refusing to cooperate after not getting his own way, Koushi replied, “I’d rather play DS.” Further angered by his words, Shigeta grabbed the boy and bound his hands and feet with plastic twine, then covered both his mouth and eyes with tape. Finally, she pulled a garbage bag over the boy’s head and thrust his feet into another, drawing them together at his waist and sealing them shut. “I intended to untie him once he’d apologised,” the mother later said.

Whether this was indeed the case, it appears that Shigeta, still under the influence of the pills and alcohol she had swallowed, fell asleep again soon after binding her son, leaving him trapped in the bags and unable to breathe. At 12:15 p.m., the boy’s father entered the room and discovered his son and wife. He tore the bags open, but Koshi was already unconscious. An ambulance was called and the boy was rushed to hospital, but sadly he was pronounced dead three days later. Cause of death: hypoxic encephalopathy, or brain damage caused by lack of oxygen.
