New Orleans police arrest two gang-rape suspects, seek a third

Sex crimes detectives have arrested two of three young men accused of gang-raping a teenage woman last weekend both in an eastern New Orleans laundry room and behind a Dumpster.

Joshua Dixon, 18, and Ryan Powell Jr., 17, each face one count of aggravated rape. They remained behind bars Friday. A judge set Dixon's bail at $200,000 and Powell's at $500,000, according to Criminal District Court records.

The third suspect, identified in documents as Rashad Williams, remained at large Friday.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, the 19-year-old victim parked her car in the 7000 block of Crowder Boulevard and walked toward her apartment on July 10 about 10 p.m. A man holding a handgun suddenly approached her and told her to head behind a nearby Dumpster.

There, he forced her to perform oral sex and raped her, police said.

The man then ordered the victim to go to the laundry room, where he forced her to have sex with two other men. The victim called the police afterward.

Dixon went to speak with the Sex Crimes Unit Tuesday evening. He allegedly "implicated himself" during his taped meeting with detectives and told them Powell, a classmate of his the past three years, also raped the 19-year-old -- after pulling a gun on her, court records show.

Detectives jailed the 5-foot-7, 135-pound Dixon immediately. They arrested 5-foot-6, 150-pound Powell at his home in the 2600 block of Viola Street a day later.

In his recorded interview with police, Powell allegedly confessed to raping the woman. But he said he did so only after Williams, the third suspect, grabbed a gun and forced him to do it.

Court records do not show previous arrests in New Orleans for Dixon, Powell or Williams. Dixon worked at a fast food restaurant. Powell was unemployed.

An aggravated rape conviction carries a mandatory life sentence.
