A man lost half his ear following an attack by a pitbull dog, allegedly while involved in an altercation with another man.

The victim, in his 20s, is undergoing surgery in Auckland Hospital and is in a stable condition following the attack in a vehicle on Auckland's North Shore yesterday.

A man, 23, has appeared in the North Shore District Court facing a charge of owning a dog that attacked a person, assault with intent to injure and assault on a female.

North Shore police say the charges faced by the man, Tony Scorgie, follow the incident inside a parked vehicle outside a property on Meadowood Drive.

Police allege Scorgie assaulted his relative's boyfriend and the dog joined in, biting off half of the victim's ear.

Scorgie was arrested shortly afterwards.

The dog, described as a pitbull terrier cross, has been seized by dog control officers and a court order is being sought for its destruction.
