'I did it': Hitman admits killing four people to clear 'innocent' teenager who confessed to murder 'just to satisfy police'

A Detroit hitman convicted of eight murders has said he is willing to take responsibility for four more to help clear the name of a young man whom he claims was wrongly convicted.

Serial killer Vincent Smothers, who is serving a sentence of at least 52 years, says Davontae Sanford confessed to the killings at the age of 14 in order to satisfy the police.

Sanford's guilty plea earned him a prison sentence of almost 40 years, which he is fighting to overturn.

Smothers confessed to the murders, dubbed the Runyon Street slayings, when he was captured in 2008 - but prosecutors have never charged him, and never explained why.
