Youth tells police he stabbed mother, grandmother, then torched house in Shizuoka

SHIZUOKA — Police said Wednesday that a 17-year-old youth has admitted fatally stabbing his mother and grandmother and then setting fire to their house in Shizuoka City. According to police, flames were seen coming from a wooden three-story house at about 8 a.m. Wednesday, TBS reported. By the time firefighters extinguished the blaze, the 2nd and 3rd floors had been badly damaged. The two bodies were found on the third floor. Police said they had stab wounds to the chest. They were identified as Hideko Sugimoto, 50, and her mother Mitsue, 78, police said. Sugimoto’s 17-year-old son was found on the 1st floor, suffering from smoke inhalation. He was taken to hospital where he told police that he had stabbed his mother and grandmother and then set fire to house. So far, he has given no motive for his actions, TBS reported.

Three killed in US supermarket shooting

Three people are dead after an early morning shooting at a supermarket in the US state of New Jersey. Officials in the town of Old Bridge say several workers were stacking shelves at the Pathmark supermarket when a man burst in and opened fire. He shot dead two people before killing himself. Surgeon cuts directly into heart, kills man

A man died after his surgeon cut directly into his heart, a coroner has found. Ernest George Sutherland died at Palmerston North hospital in July, 2010 after his surgeon made the fatal error while operating around the man's heart. The 76-year-old had significant health problems, including congestive heart failure, renal dysfunction and asthma. He had been admitted twice to hospital in the month before his final visit, for breathlessness. On his last trip, on July 23, it was decided that fluid, which appeared to be in a sac around his heart, should be drained through a "pericardial window" - a permanent opening in the tissue. Unfortunately, on the day of the operation, there was no sign of the fluid that had earlier been seen on an echocardiogram, or sonogram, and the sac had attached itself to Mr Sutherland's heart. Surgeon Bruce Rhind cut into the sac but instead of stopping before the heart, he cut directly into it, which resulted in Mr Sutherland's death.

100-year-old driver hits 11 near LA school

So people began pounding on his windows screaming for him to stop, a witness said. Alma Solache said she was buying her children an afterschool snack Wednesday just before the accident outside a South Los Angeles school. "He was not paying attention," said Solache, 24, adding that it was at least two or three seconds before the vehicle halted and people began pulling children out from beneath the car. Four of the children were in critical condition when firefighters arrived but they were stabilized and were in serious condition at a hospital, city fire Capt. Jaime Moore said. Everyone was expected to survive, he said.

Bible students forced to speak in tongues

Some 70 students at the college outlined their grievances in a letter to the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT), student newspaper Universitas reports. In the letter, the students accuse the school of widespread harassment, which included forcing them to speak in tongues. According to the letter, signed by more half the students at the English-language school, staff also charged them with “carrying the devil’s spirit and practising witchcraft”.

Founded in 2010 by Finn Henrik Larsen – a pastor with the Pentecostalist Regnbuen (Rainbow) church – the college offers two-year courses with the aim of ”training men and women to become leaders of churches, organizations and in society.” According to Larsen, the students’ complaints came as a major surprise to staff at the college. “I’m trying to figure out why nobody said anything about the issues they are dissatisfied with,” he told Universitas. “We were not made aware of the contents of the letter until several months after it was sent. A Siberian tiger has attacked and killed a female keeper at a zoo in Germany. It seems an unlocked gate at Cologne Zoo allowed the tiger, Altai, to get out of its pen and into a store, where it attacked the zookeeper. The zoo's director then shot the animal through a skylight in the store, before it could go further and get into public areas. "We cannot yet explain how the keeper could make such a fatal mistake (of failing to close the gate)," zoo director Theo Pagel said. NIIGATA — The chief of a police station in in Tainai, Niigata Prefecture apparently hanged himself in a park on Monday night, police said Tuesday. According to police, the body of Yoshinobu Yahagi, 53, was found in a park near the station by another police officer at about 8:15 p.m., NTV reported. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police said that Yahagi called the station at 7:30 p.m. and asked an officer to go and check his room at the police dormitory where Yahagi lived. The officer found Yahagi’s will and personal letters there, NTV reported.

Rampaging bull kills Swiss farmer

The tragedy occurred as the man led his cows and two bulls from the barn of his farm in the Bichwil-Oberwil region, cantonal police said. Pensioner dies after cow attack

The accident happened on Saturday as Rolf Rudsengen tried to chase away two cows that had stepped onto his land near Trevatna Lake, newspaper Nationen reports. One of the cows responded by attacking Rudsengen, breaking three of his ribs and a shoulder blade in the process. The animal is believed to have bundled the man to the ground before dragging him several metres across a field. There were no eye-witnesses to the incident, but a neighbouring woman heard his cry for help and called for an ambulance. When she arrived at the scene, she too was attacked by the cow. Rudsengen died from his injuries on Tuesday at GjøvikHospital. Its owner has now had the animal put down.

Roberta McIvor was 32 years old when she died in the early hours of July 30, 2011. After a night of parties, she passed out in the passenger side of her 2005 Chevy Impala, with the keys hidden in the console. According to the documents, the two girls convicted, just 15 and 17 at the time, decided to steal the car after leaving a party. At some point, the girls pulled over and decided to remove McIvor from the car, stripping her of her clothes in the process. She was left naked except for her bra, on the side of the road as the car sped away from the scene, the court heard. However, the two girls were unaware McIvor was entangled in the seatbelt and was being dragged behind the vehicle. McIvor’s body was dragged for about one kilometre before her arm was trapped under the rear passenger wheel, which caused her head to be pulled from her body by the seatbelt that was around her neck. It was believed this occurred about 3 a.m. There is no evidence to suggest either of the accused knew what had happened to McIvor. After both taking turns at the wheel driving around Sandy Bay the vehicle was abandoned when it ran out of gas.

A woman and two young boys were found stabbed to death in their home hours after the woman's husband died while driving the wrong way on Interstate 94 near Michigan City, Ind. early Thursday, police say. Police say Michael Van Der Linden, 38, pulled out of a rest park around 1:30 a.m. and headed east in the westbound lanes, striking a car in the center lane, police said. WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Soldiers killed themselves at a higher monthly rate in July than any other since detailed statistics have been kept on the issue, the U.S. Army said Thursday. A total of 38 confirmed or suspected suicides were counted by the Army last month in a tally that took into account both active and non-active duty soldiers who serve in the Army National Guard or Reserve. Three of those active duty soldiers were deployed at the time of their death. Prior to the announcement, the highest monthly level suicide rate for soldiers was 33 in the months of June 2010 and July 2011 according to statistics released by the Army.

TOCHIGI — Police said Thursday that the bodies of two brothers were discovered in an apartment in Utsunomiya and a third in a car parked nearby, in what they are treating as a murder-suicide. The Diocese will not confirm the reports and Bishop Bill Wright says it is not in anyone's best interest to make known the total number of settlements or the amount involved. But solicitor John Ellis from Sydney firm David Beggs and Associates says he has acted on behalf of victims and believes the number could be higher. "We've acted in probably about 60 claims or more against the Diocese over the last three years," he said. "And we're aware that there's been other firms who have brought claims, we're also aware a number of claims have been brought directly to the Diocese without any solicitors involved. Jeanette Goodwin, 47, broke off the long-term relationship with Martin Bunch, 44, and went back to her husband of 21 years, Mark. The couple were at home preparing a barbecue when Bunch forced his way into the garden through a gap in the fence and launched the fatal attack. Mrs Goodwin bled to death on her patio after a 5in blade was plunged into her chest more than 20 times as Bunch crowed: ‘I told her I would kill her.'
