A 26-year-old Cairns man who stabbed a mother to death in front of her five-year-old daughter has been sentenced to life in prison. Mark Andrew Stephenson yesterday pleaded guilty to the murder of Leanne Mayhew in her Manoora home in August, 2010. The Supreme Court in Cairns heard Stephenson was affected by drugs and alcohol when he killed the 24-year-old woman, just hours after her neighbours saw the pair chatting and laughing. Stephenson repeatedly stabbed Ms Mayhew in the head and face but told police he could not explain why he attacked her. Ms Mayhew's five-year-old daughter was found outside the apartment crying and with blood on her hands and feet.
